Piano Study And Gender Associations: A Query Into The Perceptions Of Children Ages Five To Fourteen, Richard C. Winfree
Music Theses & Dissertations
From its inception, male composers and performers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Cliburn, and Kempffhad dominated piano performance. Recent research suggests, however, that the piano has been designated with a feminine gender stereotype. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of public school children ages five to fourteen years old relative to gender association and piano study to determine if a gender stereotype existed and at what age, if any, the stereotype stabilized.
To achieve this purpose, two surveys were created and implemented by the researcher. The first survey was administered to 879 students in …

The Efficacy Of Smartmusic® Assessment As A Teaching And Learning Tool, Michael William Buck
Dissertations
This study examined the effects of SmartMusic® assessment on student music performance while integrating research-based teaching and learning components. Over approximately three weeks, 46 high school band students (N=46) received five 15-minute teacher-led music lessons, totaling 75 minutes of instruction. Two groups, teacher-led instruction or teacher-led instruction using SmartMusic® assessment, were determined by randomly splitting pairs of matched-subjects within woodwind, brass, or mallet percussion families. Constant for both groups, instruction and evaluation materials included teaching and learning practice rubrics, a criterion-referenced performance evaluation form, and short lyrical and technical etudes complemented with respective skill development exercises. Pre- and post-test measures …

Making The Grade: Authentic Assessment Through Music Portfolios, Kendra June S. Aylor
Theses & Honors Papers
Research shows assessment is an important part of education. However, information on assessment in music is often limited to secondary education leaving elementary music teachers to devise their own systems of evaluation students. This teacher research addresses elementary music assessment by examining the implementation of student portfolios as a way to manage the data that is created in the music classroom. The portfolios were compiled using fourth grade student work which was divided into section that mirror the MENC National Standards. This research shows that student portfolios provide tangible evidence of student understanding to be shared with teachers, parents, and …

A Critical Review Of Violin Solos Section Of The Nyssma Manual, Di Su
Publications and Research
The New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) runs an annual evaluation of students' musical performance. The purposes of the evaluation are to promote music programs in the schools and communities of New York State, and to provide a means of objective evaluation of musical performance. The evaluation is influential because the selections of participant for All-State, All-County, and other music festivals are mainly based upon NYSSMA scores. To familiarize the evaluation criteria and to prepare students to meet the requirements, New York State music teachers use the "NYSSMA Manual" as an important teaching guide. Aiming at future revisions, this …

Tradition And Innovation: The Lives And Music Of Women Composers, Shannon K. Kane
Tradition And Innovation: The Lives And Music Of Women Composers, Shannon K. Kane
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
My Capstone Project, entitled “Tradition and Innovation: The Lives and Music of Women Composers,” is a combination of a creative project and written thesis that explores the struggles that women faced as members of society and composers throughout history. The written portion details the expectations set for women by society and how these expectations had a role in their personal lives and their music. I explore stereotypes and societal values that women lived regularly, including the expectation of women to never perform for a public audience, to obey their fathers and husbands and therefore only receive training with their permission, …

Reducing Attrition Rates In The Middle School Band Program: A Study Of Motivating Factors That Encourage Students To Be Successful In Playing An Instrument And Continuing In Middle School Band., Daphne Guill
Theses & Honors Papers
By discovering musical and non-musical factors that motivate middle school students to become successful in playing an instrument and continuing in band, directors will be able to reduce the attrition rates in their programs. Factors explored in this project included student motivation, improvement in skills, performance preference and social aspects. Pre-term and post-term surveys were created for students and their parents in grades sixth, seventh and eighth. Pre-term survey information contributed to the development and implementation of lesson plans, performance opportunities, and classroom activities. Post-term survey information was used to evaluate the extent to which student's needs and expectations for …
Integrating Handel's Oratorios Into The Middle School Repertoire: Arranging For Middle School Choirs, Maya Louise Neely
Integrating Handel's Oratorios Into The Middle School Repertoire: Arranging For Middle School Choirs, Maya Louise Neely
Theses & Honors Papers
As a choral teacher of middle school students, one of the most difficult tasks is finding music that suits their young voices. When a choral director wants appropriate music for young voices composed by George Frideric Handel, the challenges increase. In many situations, music arranged for two-part and three-part choirs can be used in place of the original composition. Although the vocal parts are adapted to fit the special requirements of the young vocalist, the general tone of the composition is similar.
To adapt these original compositions to the middle school choral repertoire, the previous arranger's techniques were observed and …

Positive Breathing Techniques For Vocal Health In High School Choral Curriculum, Cynthia C. Breckenridge
Positive Breathing Techniques For Vocal Health In High School Choral Curriculum, Cynthia C. Breckenridge
Theses & Honors Papers
Breathing is the foundation for all phonation, but the means for achieving the best use of the breath in singing is debatable. Prescribed methods range from Cornelius Reid, who stated that "breathing can be mastered by students of no more than an average intelligence and ability within a very short time,"(Reid Bel Canto 145) to Richard Miller who described the muscles and organs of respiration in great detail and provided pages of detailed exercises to develop the breath support for singing. Samuel H. Nelson reminded his readers that every student is individual and may have differences in the breathing apparatus …

The Gift Of Music, Lucy Lewis
Successful Teaching Strategies In Band Programs With At-Risk Students, Kevin D. Lewis
Successful Teaching Strategies In Band Programs With At-Risk Students, Kevin D. Lewis
Theses & Honors Papers
This thesis examines instructional methods for teachers of music in the new age and how to make the things learned in class relevant to their daily lives. As culture around the world is steadily changing, the methods for instruction need to be changing along with it. Not only does instruction need to now incorporate new technology, it also needs to provide students with relevant experiences they can utilize later in life. The thesis argues that teachers of music need to utilize technology in their classroom, respect the student’s creative choices, and encourage experiential learning.

Debating Assessment In Music Education, Ryan Fisher
Debating Assessment In Music Education, Ryan Fisher
Research & Issues in Music Education
Music education organizations achieved a huge success in Texas several years ago when legislation declared music as a part of the core curriculum. Similarly, more recent national education legislation like No Child Left Behind has recognized music as a core curricular subject. Since that time, little has been done to assess music students to ensure a set of basic skills and knowledge is being achieved. While national and state music standards exist, these standards, in many cases, are not mandatory and merely serve as a guide or recommendations for music educators to follow. Other core subjects endure severe oversight and …
A Study Of The Comparative Perceptions Of Non-Tenured And Tenured Music Teachers And Music Supervisors Regarding The Needs And Concerns Of The Teacher In Music Performance Education, Dale E. Johanson
Research & Issues in Music Education
The purpose of this study was to elicit information through a survey from non-tenured and tenured music performance teachers and their music supervisors concerning their perceived needs and concerns at work. An instrument created for evaluation and assessment was constructed to yield twelve scale areas of needs and concerns. Comparison of responses provided results showing areas of congruence and disagreement among music performance teachers and supervisors.
Teachers placed teaching materials and resources as a high concern while supervisors expressed greatest concern in the area of music-related competence. In terms of assistance, non-tenured music teachers felt that mentor teachers, music conferences, …

Forms Of Graduate Music Education: A Response To Kenneth Phillip, David G. Hebert
Research & Issues in Music Education
It is truly an honor to see a response to my article from Professor Kenneth H. Phillips, in his “Graduate Music Education” within Research and Issues in Music Education, 6(1). Professor Phillips is an outstanding scholar and educator who has made a unique and important contribution to the fields of music education research and practice. His book on choral music is unusually insightful, and his most recent book on music education research is also a highly recommended resource that I use for my own graduate courses, some of which are online (Phillips, 2003; Phillips, 2008). I encourage readers to give …
