Beyond Surrealism: The Developing Keyboard Style Of André Souris, Melanie T. Mallard

André Souris (1899-1970) is perhaps best known as a musical contributor to the Belgian surrealist group founded by Paul Nougé, but he assumed many roles throughout his life, including composer, writer, director, and promoter of modern music. His various interests influenced the style of his compositions, which remain largely unpublished and have received little scholarly attention beyond researchers of surrealism. Through this survey of many of Souris’ works for keyboard, I attempt to lay the groundwork for further discussion about Souris’ musical contributions not only through the lens of surrealism but also throughout his compositional career. This study analyzes two chamber music works by Korean composer Hyo-shin Na, Song of the Fog and From Korea to America, focusing on how the fusion of Eastern and Western instruments contributes to musical expression and timbral characteristics. It includes an examination of the role of instrumental arrangement and reveals the composer's narrative and emotional intentions. The aim is to present an insight into Hyo-shin Na’s ensemble style.

Song of the Fog uses the Japanese koto with Western chamber instruments to depict the imagery of the accompanying poetry through changes in timbre, dynamic contrasts, and various performance techniques. Despite …

In this era of increased globalization, our education system is actively embracing multiculturalism, with educators incorporating diverse perspectives into their classrooms. A noticeable trend among music educators is the introduction of compositions by non-white male composers at conferences and in educational publications. In fact, we can now find more pedagogical pieces featuring distinctive musical languages and cultural influences, marking a shift from the predominantly European tradition seen in the past.

This document examines the importance of the role of the National Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) in the Philippines and its commissioned competition pieces for solo piano by Philippine National Artists for Music. It underscores the significance of NAMCYA’s contribution to nurturing young talents and enriching Philippine piano literature that helps strengthen its national identity. An analysis of selected commissioned works by Col. Antonino Buenaventura, Lucrecia Kasilag, and Ramon Santos, shows the integration of Western and Filipino musical idioms with neo-classical, neo-romantic, and contemporary composition techniques. Performance notes are also provided to assist future pedagogues and performers of these works.

This paper and its corresponding study were created to explore the effectiveness of the Kodály Method on traditional piano lessons and to hone a curriculum with long-term student musicianship at its core. The curriculum was written for a six-week period and intended for students ages six–eight years old. The curriculum follows the melodic and rhythmic sequences of the Kodály Method and blends these sequences with traditional approaches to beginning piano lessons. The purpose of the study is to share and evaluate this curriculum and its results as they pertain to the four study participants.

However, in Taiwan, the idea of music community outreach is relatively new and not as commonly seen as in the United States. This research provides mention of community outreach organizations and individuals in Taiwan and the United States. Additionally, it is aimed to assist in designing more successful programs in the future. This thesis analyzes Akira Yuyama’s piano collections and method for children published before 2000. Akira Yuyama was born in Hiratsuka, Japan on September 9th, 1932 and spent his childhood during World War II. At the age of 23, Yuyama graduated from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and won first prize in the 9th Japan Music Competition for his Sonatine for Violin and Piano. He also won the Grand Prize at the Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival. This document aims to find how composer Camargo Guarnieri uses Brazilian trends and incorporates them into his individual style, specifically in his Twenty Estudos for piano. The long compositional period of these pieces displays frequent experimentation and maturation in Guarnieri’s style between 1949 and 1988. The trends that Guarnieri follow can be traced by examining his life, environment, and teachings. Brazilian figure and instructor, Mario de Andrade, also contributes to molding and refining Guarnieri’s ideas. With this study, the Twenty Estudos will display Guarnieri’s individualistic use of Brazilian trends and how they correlate to his mature compositional style.

Luis Abraham Delgadillo (1884–1961) is one of the most representative Nicaraguan musicians from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Works such as his Sinfonía Indígena (Indigenous Symphony), Suite Teotihuacán (Teotihuacán Suite), and Sinfonía Incaica(Incaic Symphony) positioned him as one of the most important composers and pianists from Latin America.
