The Effects Of Contextual Interference On The Acquisition, Retention, And Transfer Of A Music Motor Skill Among University Musicians, Leslie Paige Rose

The contextual interference hypothesis holds that simple motor skill tasks are best learned when practiced under blocked, or repetitive conditions, but that retention and transfer are best accomplished when the skill has been practiced in varied conditions. The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of contextual interference practice conditions on the acquisition, retention, and transfer of a complex task—right hand lead percussion sticking technique among university musicians. All participants (N = 120) demonstrated rhythmic competency for the task, and were necessarily unable to perform the sticking technique with accuracy at the start of treatment. The problem of this study was the inconsistency between perceptions of secondary choral music educators and college and university choral music professors pertaining to needed leadership and administrative training in undergraduate music teacher education programs. The purpose of this study was to design and develop a model handbook of administrative and management procedures to guide secondary school instrumental music teachers and directors in the Prosser, Washington, School District. To accomplish this purpose, current research and literature on secondary instrumental music, and the administration and management of music programs was reviewed. Additionally, selected materials were obtained from secondary music programs of similar size in eastern Washington.

This paper presents a discussion of fourteen sacred solo songs by Henry Purcell found in Harmonia Sacra. Background material is given on Purcell's career and the poets of the songs. The discussion of the music is divided into four areas, form, melody, texture, and harmony. The final chapter is a detailed analysis of one of the songs, "Tell Me, Some Pitying Angel."

The Basic Instrumental Method is an attempt to provide music materials suitable for the teaching of instrumental music to children in the grade schools using the class method. Four approaches have been used in developing this method. They are the following: (1) The selection of six basic instruments suitable for small children, (2) arrangement of the material in such a manner as to allow for individual advancement, (3) a well graded presentation of rhythmic problems, and (4) a recognition of the psychological value of motivation.
