The purpose of this study has been to trace the development of music in St. George, Utah from its settlement in 1861 to 1941, an eighty-year period of much change. It has been an attempt, therefore, to show the musical heritage which this city now enjoys.

Music as a therapy still awaits complete recognition from many medical authorities. any doctors and psychiatrists are quite willing to recognize music as a potent agent in relaxing tensions and stimulating activity, but thus far only in too few instances has music been accorded status equivalent to that of the other accepted therapies.1 In the treatment of some types of mental illness it is the writer's belief music lends itself as a therapy more readily than any other medium.

The libretto of the opera is a verbatim setting of Edna St. Vincent Millay's one act play "Aria da Capo." World events, especially World War II and the current Korean War influenced the choice of this timely, yet timeless play. Miss Millay's death occurred during the composition of the opera. She never knew, therefore, of the composition or performance of her play as an opera.

The form of the opera is that of the "da capo" aria. he form, of course, was determined by the play which ends exactly as it started. Thematic material consists …

The purpose of this study is to determine factors influencing musical preference. The most important factor related to preference for classical music is thought by some to be the cultural background of the listener. According to Lazersfeld, "there is probably no question so sensitive to socialize differences as listening to serious music." This is consistent with the opinion of musicians and music critics who state that discriminating musical taste is a result of frequent listening to good music.

The purpose of this thesis is to present an account of the endeavors of Carlos Chávez to reveal Mexican nationalism through music. The study begins with a brief survey of Mexico's history with emphasis upon the presence of caciquismo and caudillismo. Politically, Mexican nationalism is a blend of the dynastic nationalism of sixteenth century Spain and the popular nationalism of the late eighteenth century. Ethnologically, Mexican Nationalism includes elements of Spanish, Indian, and mestizo culture. During the century following Independence as well as during Spanish domination the art and music of both Indians and mestizos were thrust aside in favour …

This parade for a snowshoe festival in Lewiston’s Kennedy Park, shows an ice palace in the background. Bert Dutil is in the front row playing the glockenspiel. Bert Dutil, his grandfather Louis Sr. (“Pitou”), father Armand, and uncles Raymond and Louis Jr. Were known as “The Snowshoe Family” for their involvement in the International Snowshoe Union. The three sons of Pitou formed a drum and bugle corps associated with the Pastime Social Club (Le passe Temps) in Lewiston. The Pastime Drum and Bugle Corp was the first to introduce the glockenspiel and color guard. Bert Dutil, who joined the snowshoe …

Alexis J. Cote is a celebrated music director who taught in the Lewiston school system for over 20 years and later as the director of the vocal music program in the Portland school system for over 15 years. He was the choral director and church organist at St. Louis Parish in New auburn and organist and choir director at the Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland. Since 1940, he has served a director of L’Orpheon. The group continues to perform programs in French, English, and Latin.
