2018 Festschrift: Franz Josef Haydn's "The Creation"

In a culture conducive to refining his compositions, Haydn was able to find success through his patrons and musical techniques. London was the largest musical city at the time, where advertising played a key role in the attendance at concerts. Haydn attended performances there which educated him on London’s music. His patrons (such as violinist Johann Peter Salomon and author Charles Burney) were immensely helpful in his growing musical career in London. Haydn’s shift in compositional style accordingly reflected his stay in London. He combined the music he heard in the city with his own musical language to create his …

Music from the Harpsichord House is an installation and series of concerts that exists in the binary of in and out of performance. During a concert, the harpsichordist is hidden inside the house and his face is live-projected outside. Fifteen new musical compositions were commissioned for the harpsichord house.

Symphony No. 2: Sights in Sound is an original composition for full chorus, string orchestra, woodwind quintet, eight-part percussion ensemble, and piano. Each of the work’s twelve movements utilizes a different combination of instruments, provides a distinct programmatic or cultural setting, and can be easily performed individually, outside of the full symphonic context. Despite this, the symphony as a whole is well bonded through various traditional elements and unifying themes. The titles of the movements are as follows: I. Phenomena of the Sky, II. Arirang, III. Acoustics Of The Louis Armstrong Theatre, Bailey Groendyke

Like many multipurpose auditoriums, the Louis Armstrong Theatre (LAT) at Grand Valley State University has been reported by a considerable number of students and faculty to have unsatisfactory acoustics for music performance. This study focused on physical measurements and simulated changes to LAT. Reverberation time (RT) was measured by filling LAT with sound and measuring the decay for select frequencies as per ASTM E2235 protocol, and the initial time delay gap (ITDG) was determined using slapsticks as an impulsive sound source. A model of LAT was also constructed from blueprints and physical measurements; simulations using this model were conducted using …
