Exploring The Expressive Beauty Of Brahms' Op. 119, No. 1: A Journey Through The Composer's Late Piano Works, Jiaqi Zhang

Student Research Symposium

Brahms' Intermezzo in B minor, Op. 119, No. 1 is a profound and beautiful piece that exemplifies the composer's mastery of harmony, melody, and form present in his final works for piano. This composition reflects the cyclical nature of life and also provides insight into Brahms' own personal struggles. Emotional intensity is achieved through harmonic tension and release, and effective interpretation requires pianists to deeply understand these harmonic processes. An examination of both the state of Brahms' experiences during the time of this composition and the harmonic aspects of the piece can deepen one's understanding and appreciation of this late …

Effectiveness Of A Nurse-Led Songwriting Intervention On Quality Of Life For Individuals With Chronic Pain, Marcia Henry

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects

Abstract

Chronic pain affects 20% of the U.S. and global population. With the worsening opioid crisis there is a growing need for alternative therapies. Individuals with chronic pain often experience depression, stress, and poor quality of life. The Theory of Unpleasant Symptoms guided this prospective cohort design project in a pilot study (N = 13) examining the effectiveness of songwriting to improve quality of life in this population. A master’s prepared nurse and experienced songwriter administered 6 weekly songwriting sessions in an online chronic pain support group. Neurologic Music Therapy(NMT) is an interdisciplinary training, unaffiliated with the music therapy profession. NMT is a world wide medical organization that specializes in research, techniques and practices that specialize in the brain's relationship with music. Due to the broad nature of the music therapy profession, many undergraduate students either briefly know about NMT or don't know anything about it at all. Research has proven the effectiveness of NMT techniques and principles, but no one has examined the worth of NMT training when combined with music therapy education and clinical experience.My project examines and analyzes the effect of NMT on the …

Interactive Sculpture/Audio Installation - World Tree Melody - World Science Festival (Queensland Museum), Guy A. Cooper

Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai

World Tree Melody is an interactive sculptural and sonic installation by Guy Cooper, exhibited at the World Science Festival Brisbane (Queensland Museum) in 2023. This work explores the fusion of creative technologies and public art through motion-activated sound, custom Arduino programming, multi-channel audio sampling, and evolving music composition. Visitors become active participants in the work, triggering a generative soundscape through physical interaction with the sculpture.

Constructed from copper pipe, hand-crafted leaves, and an organic tree core, the piece is powered by two Arduino microcontrollers, four motion sensors, and seven-channel 24-bit/48kHz audio samplers. Over 400 lines of custom code manage a …
