Make War To Make Peace: Themes Of War In Trombone Solo Literature, Ian Rutherford

The trombone has a relatively small amount of solo literature, especially for how long it has existed. Many professors only teach and perform an even smaller number of those pieces. Some works are compelling and captivating but rarely performed. The purpose of this document is to explore two lesser-known works that have an exciting connection; they are both works about war. I Was Like Wow for Tenor Trombone and Boombox by Jacob Ter Veldhuis (JacobTV) and Encounters IV for Tenor Trombone and Multi-Percussion by William Kraft are two original works for trombone that explore themes of war.

Individuals from the deaf and hard-of-hearing community are likely to experience more anxiety and depression due to defective cognitive, social, communicational, and emotional skills (Azizi et al., 2019). The word “disability” is embedded with historical negative connotations with phrases such as “deaf and dumb” because if they were deaf or mute then they were automatically labeled as inferior (Horovitz, 2007). Since the 18th century, the DHH community has been seen as incapable, even inhuman, hence the development of emotional deficiencies that bleed into one’s perception of society and their self esteem (Gallaudet, 1886).

The music of American composer Vivian Fine (1913-2000) has fallen into obscurity despite its high quality. Her musical career has led her from being a child-prodigy at the piano to being a part of the elite inner circle of avant-garde composers in New York in the early 1930s, and ultimately to a faculty position at Bennington College in the 1960s. Due to the stability and job security that the academic world brought to Fine, she was able to dedicate most of her time to composition. Among the discipline of music, the representation of women in music professions and the artform itself reveals great disparities between gender identities. In spite of this, musician and composer Jeanne Shaffer approaches the ongoing fight for women’s representation and equity in music. Shaffer’s piece “Three Faces of Woman” for clarinet and piano (1995) depicts three delineations of femininity that women are reduced to. Influenced by cultural minimalization of women, Shaffer’s piece uses different compositional genres as vehicles to illustrate these ever-present stereotypes and the unyielding need to combat them. French Nasal Vowels In The Mezzo-Soprano Voice, Jada G. Duff

This paper focuses on the four French nasal vowels in the mezzo-soprano voice. It clearly states how to pronounce the vowel with and without nasality. The paper displays spectrogram images to compare the resonance between the non-nasal and nasal vowels in different registers. It addresses the need for modification of the vowels in different registers of the mezzo-soprano voice. The paper also describes how to apply the results of the information from the spectrogram images to French pieces. The repertoire includes works by Jules Massenet, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Isaac Albéniz, Francis Poulenc, and Erik Satie.

This document seeks to propose new paradigms in band performance through inter-, multi-, and transdisciplinarity. Initial inspirations were drawn from performance innovations shaped by the new music theater which became popular in the 20^th century. Key concepts which were used throughout the creative, planning, logistic, rehearsal, and performance processes are analyzed in three recitals through prototypes of new paradigms in band performance. These concepts include accessibility and community, nonverbal/multimodal performance and instruction versus time, and nonverbal/multimodal communication.

The Metaphorical Inevitability Of Death As Seen In Three Settings Of Goethe's Der Erlkönig, Eric Wood

Goethe’s Der Erlkönig, published in 1791, laid the foundation for many musical settings of its text. The three that will be discussed in this thesis are by Franz Schubert (1815), Carl Loewe (1824), and Emilie Mayer (1870). Each of these three settings evokes the metaphorical concept of inevitability. In Mayer’s setting, the harp-like accompaniment pattern that follows the Erlking suggests a calm presence, but the text shows the Erlking’s true nature. Loewe’s setting is entirely in G (major and minor), which I interpret as two sides of the same coin– the positive false reality that the Erlking provides and the …

Film scores typically feature large instrumental ensembles, sometimes with choir added at pivotal moments. Rarely, however, is the choir entrusted with a greater percentage of the score, and far too scores explore the sonic potential that vocal music has to offer. In fact, in a recent study of 800 films, none contained a score that was completely c. Thus, the body of unaccompanied choral film scores is practically non-existent. Composers continually seek new timbres and sonorities to bend to their will. The early music revival of the twentieth century has resurrected dozens of instruments that have gone unutilized in contemporary composition for centuries. The historically-informed-performance movement has now evolved to a point where early instruments and period performance techniques can add extraordinary new characters to twenty-first century compositions. This thesis explores how composers effectively utilize early instruments like the viola da gamba, harpsichord, lute, and recorder in their compositions.

This paper explores the presence of White Supremacists, racists and neo-Nazis within the genres and associated subcultures of skinhead punk and black metal. It discusses the history of both genres and how specific events and subcultural aspects contributed to the growth in both number and influence of racist actors in each scene. It also discusses the ways in which that racism manifests within the music itself as a means of fascist recruitment and propaganda, using examples taken from specific popular racist artists.

Symphony: Tambora is a piece for chamber orchestra that is inspired by the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in the Lesser Sunda Islands of the Phillipines. Its three movements deal with the genesis of Mount Tambora, the magma chambers filling up and spilling over, and the series of eruptions that resulted in some of the worst climate crises in recorded history. The thesis includes a score of the work, and an accompanying analysis.
