In music education, festival events are a chance to receive feedback from experts in the field. Often, these events have literature lists from which directors are required to choose literature for the event. With choral festivals being so prevalent in music education, the literature lists provided to choral music educators have a major impact on young singers. Literature selection can be intense for choral music educators who decide what factors to consider when selecting literature. The concert begins with Beethoven’s “Egmont Overture.” Beethoven wrote this music for a play written by German poet Goethe. The play portrays the sixteenth-century heroics of Count Egmont of the Netherlands, who defied a Spanish attack. The next selection will be Mozart’s “Violin Concerto No. 5, KV 219.” Mailyn Iribar will perform as the violin soloist in the concerto sometimes called “Turkish,” because of the movements and shifts from A major to A minor. After a 15-minute intermission, the evening’s concert will conclude with Haydn’s “Symphony No. 101,” or “The Clock.” This piece is one of the Austrian …

Groove Comes To The Cumberlands: The Importance Of Percussion Education In Appalachia, Timothy Adam Hopper

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative ethnographic study is to determine the effects and influences of percussion ensemble literature in underprivileged secondary schools in the Appalachian region of eastern Kentucky. This study was conducted within the framework of psychologist Yuri Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory of development. The aim was to research the importance of percussion pedagogy on the global musical knowledge and cultural understandings of high school music students and their communities from underprivileged schools in eastern Kentucky. The study sought to determine how percussion students, non-percussion students, and non-music students conceptualized these diverse and modern pieces of percussion literature. The study …
