Gender stereotypes continue to persist at all levels regarding male and female participation in music. Indeed, stereotypes are evident at the elementary and middle school levels when children choose a musical instrument for study in beginning band or orchestra. Research has shown sex-stereotyping of instruments to exist, often unconsciously, in both males and females. Usually, trombones, drums, tubas are viewed as being overtly masculine instruments while the flute, clarinet, and oboe are viewed as being overtly feminine instruments. These masculine and feminine characteristics that are placed on these instruments are often transferred to the individual who plays them. These stereotypes …

My acquaintance with Jussi Bjorling was so sporadic that it hardly entitles me to contribute to this memorial book. It was confined to a small sphere of activity- our mutual interest in giving concerts from time to time in order to lend a band with the well-intentioned community work carried out by the population of that part of the Stockholm archipelago where we both spent so many delightful summers. But Jussi did not remain just an acquaintance to anyone -his unaffected, genial nature made him immediately a friend.

The first time I heard the voice of Bjorling was on a Bell Telephone Hour, as a teen. I tuned in late on my old 1942 Sears Silvertone radio with the "magic eye.· Bjorling was in the middle of "Sylvia," I thought his the most beautiful tenor voice I had ever heard. That really got me excited and shortly afterwards I acquired an RCA Victor catalog. It was huge and had a good "Red Seal" section where I could read about the "'golden age" voice of Jussi Bjorling.

One or our long-time JBS members is Mark Elyn, who in his mid-twenties as a bass at the start of his career sang with Jussi in a 1956 Detroit Rigoletta, and then during 1958 in performances of Trovatore, Don Carlo, and Rigoletto in San Francisco, Sacramento and Los-Angeles. He observed Jussi closely in rehearsals and performances and has much to tell about those experiences.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is a broad term for treatment plans outside of conventional therapy or conventional medicine.1 The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) divides CAM therapies into three categories “Natural Products,” “Mind and Body,” and “Other Complementary Health Approaches.” The NCCIH places music in the category “Mind and Body.” This exploratory literature review provides a comprehensive review of the various ways music is being studied for its psychological, sociological, and physiological benefits.

Rāvaṇa, the ten-headed Rākṣasa (‘demon’) king of the epic the Rāmāyaṇa, is the most fascinating of all the antagonists in films based on Hindu mythology, so powerful that even the Sun cannot rise without his orders, and celebrated as an unparalleled musician-scholar and great devotee of the god Śiva. Concerto for Trumpet and Strings by Edward Gregson is a substantial work of the late twentieth century underperformed among trumpet players. The primary reasons for its relative neglect are its technical challenges and the demands of endurance it places on the player. A well-designed approach to the preparation of this work will benefit students and professional players wishing to prepare for a performance of the work. This project will combine the knowledge of researchers and teachers in formulating specific practice approaches for the concerto’s challenges.

Nocturnes have remained in the standard piano literature for over two hundred years. However, students may not study this genre of repertoire until the advanced level of playing, and might therefore lack the full skills or knowledge necessary for successful nocturne performance. The purpose of this study is to provide a current, comprehensive, didactic resource on Romantic-style pedagogical piano nocturne literature from early elementary to early advanced levels, to aid teachers in the education of their students.
