In a normal year we'd hope that the Spring issue of our Journal would already be in your hands. But planning for JBS' October conference has taken precedence, and we expect to delay the Spring issue till after the conference, and then publish a double issue.

For Thursday, October 24, our program begins with five indisputable experts on Jussi's life: First, Harald Henrysson, the curator of the Bjorling Museun in Borlange, will shed new light on the lives of David Bjorling and his three sons as they traveled throughout America during 1919- 1921 , singers for hire. Clearly these were important formative years for the boys, as they learned their craft and many life-lessons as well.

A Remarkable New Cd By And For Members Of Jbs

A spirited discussion on the Bjorling e-list last summer has led to a concrete result: A CD titled "Jussi Bjorling sings 'Che gelida manina''' and what an understatement that title contains! In fact, the CD contains fifteen (15) performances of this one aria by this one tenor, possibly the first time any group has produced such a demented project.

We are pleased to tell you about our Conference arrangements with the New Yorker Hotel. This classic hotel was opened in 1930 and was then the largest hotel in the world with 2500 rooms. It went through various boom and bust periods but starting in 1994 has been systematically renovated and is now part of the Ramada Hotel chain. This hotel has three excellent features for our purposes:

Last spring, in anticipation of the considerable effort required to organize the coming June conference at Gustavus Adolphus College, your JBS Board in its wisdom decided to forego videotaping the sessions.: Then, just before the conference, we talked with Minneapolis member Michael Mayer who persuaded us to reconsider our decision: He pointed out that he had some excellent equipment that could be set up conveniently in Bjorling Hall, and offered to take charge of all the videotaping. Further, he would do the editing and take charge of getting the tapes copied and distributed.

Our first JBS Conference in Washington, D.C., during early June 1999, was a happy success and we've been trying to find the right formula for our second. Now the JBS Board has decided to accept the warm invitation of Anders Bjorling to meet on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College in St Peter, MN, in the anniversary year 2001 and at a beautiful venue: the Jussi Bjorling Concert Hall, for four days during the last weekend in June.

Looking Down From The Top Of A Redwood Tree, Keri Pertuit

LSU Master's Theses

“Looking Down from the Top of a Redwood Tree” was a collaboration with my brother, Fabein Miguel Disedare. From the onset of this project, I reached out to him about the possibility of him creating the poetry, functioning as the lyrics of this piece. When working with Fabein, he suggested the topic of global warming, and we agreed to incorporate this theme through the telling of a story from the perspective of Redwood Tree located on the California coast. This song cycle follows the story of a family of trees inhabiting the coastline, their struggles with deforestation, their lack of …
