The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) lists music as part of a “well-rounded education,” yet several studies have shown that charter school students have less access to music than traditional schools. The purpose of this study is to explore if this trend extends to Florida charter middle school students. Of particular interest is whether the for-profit or nonprofit status of charter management organizations and school characteristics impact music course enrollment. The researcher created a database using publicly available school data and accountability reports for the 2019-20 school year. Results find a significant difference between charter and …

Development In Singers With Perfectionism, Melody F. White

Honors College Theses

According to Stoeber and Childs (2011), perfectionism is “a personality disposition characterized by striving for flawlessness and setting excessively high standards for performance accompanied by tendencies for overly critical evaluations” (p.2) Dispositions such as perfectionism may be prominent in individuals in the performing arts, as it may help or hinder their development. This study explores development in singers with perfectionism and ways of coping. Studies have shown that there are both positive and negative aspects of perfectionism. Positive aspects include goal progress, agreeableness, and higher functioning. Negative aspects include depression, anxiety, stress maladjustment. These negative aspects manifest in musicians through …

This collection contains printed musical scores, both popular and classical. All date from the early 20th Century (1902-1918), with the majority being published by The Columbian Conservatory of Music. Many of the scores are undated, and have been given the date of 1911, a common copyright date for many Columbian Conservatory of Music scores. All scores have been digitized.

Producing Music Using Negative Harmony, Jeremy Ahn

Honors Theses

This project uses Negative Harmony as a basis and reference point for producing original songs in the style of instrumental jazz and funk. Negative harmony is a loose term that describes a technique of reharmonization made popular by musician Jacob Collier. While negative harmony is best understood as a reharmonization technique, writing new songs and chord progressions that strive to replace common chord progressions with their negative harmony counterparts can also be an effective way to demonstrate negative harmony. Music can be made with unconventional sounding but harmonically viable chords that challenge both the musician and the listener to grow …
