Concerto For Violin And Orchestra And "Nevertheless, She Composed: A Contemporary Survey Of Women Composers Of The Twenty-First Century", Elizabeth Anne Knox

This dissertation consists of two parts: the first part includes an original composition titled, “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra.” This twenty-minute work is composed for traditional orchestral instrumentation and solo violin. Motivic variation is the primary focus of this piece with a goal to show evidence of a thorough understanding and use of this technique. In music composition, variation is a technique achieved by restating musical material in an altered form. Schoenberg describes a motive as, “a unit which contains one or more features of interval and rhythm [whose] presence is maintained in constant use throughout a piece.” Therefore, motivic …

Instruction Inspiration: A Charrette For Music Librarians, Rachel Wishkoski, J. Sylvia Yang, Veronica Wells, Angela Pratesi, Grace Haynes

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Presentations

Interactive session. Coming from architecture praxis and used in multiple design disciplines, a charrette is a structured period of intense feedback where participants work together to solve a design problem. The activity can easily be used by instructors to improve lesson plans or teaching artifacts in collaboration. Beginning with a warm-up practice activity where participants can learn how charrettes work, this session will primarily be comprised of focused small-group sharing, feedback, and brainstorming. Each participant should bring a lesson plan, teaching artifact, or other instructional challenge about which they would like to receive feedback. Small groups will be facilitated by …

The purpose of this document is to supply a comprehensive performer’s guide to American composer Kurt Erickson’s Here, Bullet, a song cycle consisting of four songs for baritone and piano set to the poetry of American poet Brian Turner. Additionally, an overview of its unique consortium-based commissioning process will be included in examination of the entrepreneurial nature of its creation.

Here, Bullet focuses on the soldier’s interaction with the bullet, suicide, foreign lands, and deployment in Iraq. The text comes from a book of poetry, which originated the song cycle’s name, and was written during Turner’s yearlong deployment to …

I Am Still On My Way: The Influence Of Motivation In Transforming Identities, Zijia Cheng

The Qualitative Report

This article explores how my identities were transformed from a piano learner and player to a piano teacher and researcher by employing motivation. My musical background, piano learning experience, understanding and knowledge have formed me as a piano learner and player. My musical identities provide motivation which influences the establishment of my new identities. To investigate my background, an autoethnographical method was employed. Through this qualitative study, I found that my identity, interests and choices of research methodologies in music education are influenced by my understandings and beliefs gained from my own learning experience.

The article presents analysis of the “a`cappella ‘Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam’” choir cycle by composer Dilorоm Amanullaeva. The paper is written from the point of view of the conductor-performer in a form of a musical work with features of sonata-symphonic cyclicity based on the classical Uzbek poetry as well as on the works of the genius poets of the past.
