The Strategies And Risks Of Performing Citizenship And Rights Through Music, Carolin Mueller

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

My work explores the capacity of cultural producers to perform “insurgent citizenship,” a term theorized by James Holsten (2008) to describe how the peripheries of social organization can propel alternative modes of civic participation, through music. I utilize Engin Isin’s performative dimension of citizenship (2017) to investigate such forms of insurgent citizenship as they evolve in social and cultural peripheries of the contemporary arts and culture industry in the city of Dresden, Germany to identify the pathways they open to socio-political participation and autonomy for refugees.

The International Fact-Finding Mission of the United Nations has condemned Myanmar’s treatment of Rohingya people as one of the world’s worst instances of ethnic cleansing, calling it “genocidal in intent.” The Rohingya are only one of many Muslim communities in Myanmar, a number of which have been subject to violent attacks by Buddhists in recent years (Wade 2017). This presentation explains the role that music plays in fostering anti-Muslim prejudice in the country’s majority Buddhist population. I present an analysis of the lyrics and accompanying videos of a corpus of recently recorded songs, all available on Youtube, and argue that …

With the September 2016 release of the American Band album, the Drive-By Truckers, a band formed in 1996, inserted themselves into discussions on politics like never before. In response to the media’s frequent question of, “What made you decide to get so political now?” the band—chiefly Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley—replied, “We have always been a political band.” This study aims to pinpoint what the band means by such a statement, first by analyzing the band’s previous albums; then by considering the band’s Southern, Bible-Belt background; and finally, by examining additional aspects of the band such as sonic qualities, genre, …

The patronage system was the dominant force behind the creation of new works of art throughout the Renaissance and helped to bring about some of the greatest masterpieces of the time. This paper will specifically examine the works patronized by Isabella d’Este, including music, musical instruments, and literature. Using the patronage classification system discussed by Howard M. Brown, this paper will discuss Isabella’s motivations as a patron, either out of an internal love of art (mecenatismo) or to conform to societal expectations and other external cultural pressures (clientelismo). There have been numerous “do’s - and - don’t’s” vocal hygiene pamphlets made for voice users, however, a guide for vocal hygiene for musical theatre performers is not typically included in these pamphlets. Musical theatre performers differ from other professional voice users, because in addition to singing, they also have the taxing responsibilities of acting and dancing. As a result, many musical theatre performers have questions and often seem confused about what proper vocal hygiene should be for them. The goal of this honors project was to create an advisory brochure on vocal hygiene specifically for musical theatre performers. This …

The Use Of Kagan Cooperative Learning Structures In Music Education To Promote Rhythm Skills And Knowledge, Emily Labes

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

The purpose of this action research was to determine if Kagan Cooperative Learning Structures produced greater achievement in music education than those who did not have the opportunity to engage in Kagan structures. The participants included 114 fourth grade students attending a public school in southern Minnesota. The scores of pre and post-tests determined student growth and achievement for both the control and treatment groups. The specific music skill assessed was rhythm. Results indicated that there was a statistically significant difference on rhythm when assessed by a paper and pencil exam when Kagan Structures were used. Analysis of a performance …

The Guia Prático, Álbuns Para Piano is a collection of fifty-nine piano pieces distributed in eleven albums that reveals not only the active role played by Heitor Villa- Lobos in music education in Brazil during the 1930s and 1940s, but also his unique compositional style. The purpose of this study is to provide a list of the fifty-nine piano pieces of the Guia Prático, Álbuns Para Piano by level of difficulty and with stylistic annotations. The Effects Within A Church Of A Music Program For Special Needs Students, Stephanie Jean Toepoel

This project investigated the effects that a faith-based music class for special needs students had upon the students, their families, and the participating church body. Two special needs students participated in a four-week faith-based general music class sponsored by their local church. Significant spiritual growth was demonstrated by the families of the special needs students and the church body and was reported in personal interviews and anonymous surveys. The study evaluated the physical, cognitive, and spiritual progress the students demonstrated during the four-week class. Data was collected through researcher observation and journaling, audiovisual recordings, personal interviews of the assistant teacher, …

The purpose of this dissertation was to analyze Martha Mier’s solo and ensemble educational repertoire that incorporates jazz, ragtime and blues elements. This document is an analysis of jazz elements from her collections: Jazz, Rag, & Blues; Classical Jazz, Rag, & Blues; Christmas Jazz, Rag, & Blues; and Jazz, Rag, & Blues for Two. The analysis includes examination of the stylistic elements, harmony, key signature, meter, and rhythmic patterns. The document includes an interview with Martha Mier regarding her work in incorporating jazz, ragtime, and blues elements in her compositions.

The Orff-Schulwerk approach to music education focuses on teaching children music through movement, repetition, and learning to play instruments. Educators who utilize the Orff-Schulwerk approach often teach students through child-sized instruments, including recorders and percussion instruments. A strong foundation of instrumental music, achieved through the usage of the Orff-Schulwerk approach in elementary music classrooms, can accelerate the learning of students as they pursue more advanced instruments and skills in band or orchestra classes during their secondary education.

As the only nationally recognized accreditor for American postsecondary music units, the National Association of Music (NASM) determines quality standards for American music training. In an effort to improve professional outcomes for music school graduates, NASM added an entrepreneurial component to both graduate and undergraduate accreditation standards as early as 1999. References to entrepreneurship within NASM conference proceedings increased between the mid-1960s and 1995, as NASM stewarded American college music training through numerous sustainability challenges resulting from intense technological, economic, political, and cultural change. The purpose of the study was to collect information about teaching music reading to piano students with Autism Spectrum Disorder and to determine best teaching practices that may be implemented into existing curricula. The study involved interviewing six professionals who are nationally recognized for successfully teaching piano to students with ASD and analyzing the interviews to learn their procedures for teaching music reading to this population.

The interviews contain information concerning the backgrounds of the individuals being interviewed, the demographic backgrounds of students being taught, and the pedagogical process, instructional materials and technology used for teaching music reading in lessons. …
