Music Programs In Urban Schools, Mikayla Battistone

18th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity (2019)

It is important to implement and maintain a music program within an urban school containing a high population of at-risk students. With the awareness of mental illness increasing, we are more knowledgeable of the cognitive deficits caused by ongoing abuse and neglect--often called complex trauma. The effects music can have on the brain combats the negative cognitive and emotional impacts of complex trauma, which is essentially the goal of music therapy. Not every child has the opportunity and/or means to experience music therapy. However, if music programs are offered in schools, kids can reap the positive benefits of music by …

Underground Opera Troupe: Early Opera In The Twenty-First Century, Abigail Josephine Hughes

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Through this project I sought to examine early opera as well as opera in America today and educate the average person about the value and availability of the genre. In order to do so, I organized and directed a small traveling opera troupe to perform in a variety of locations throughout Columbus, Ohio. The troupe performed at three locations over the course of the fall semester in 2018. With each performance, I worked to educate as many people as possible about opera and its presence in society.

Student Research Symposium

We will compare and contrast the musical form of two Brahms sonatas (Cello No. 1 in E Minor and Viola No. 2 in Eb Major) and seek to draw conclusions as to how the events leading up to and surrounding these compositions may have influenced Brahms' formal decisions. Through this research we will to bring to light how personal experiences can influence the creative processes. We will also gain insight as to how this knowledge may change the way performers interpret these pieces. We will study the musical form of each sonata as well as the context in which they …

[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)

There has been only limited research into the musics of Latin America as a whole, and the amount of musicological investigation decreases when referring to any specific country. This presentation will provide a glimpse into the rich and diverse musical output of Colombian composers in the twentieth century. It begins with a brief overview of Latin American society and Colombian musical influences and social structures. Important Colombian composers such as Guillermo Uribe Holguín are discussed, as well as general trends in classical composition at the time.
