Music Of Nazi Propaganda: A Pedagogical Analysis Of Musical Applications For Influential Power, Renee M. Banks

Although the Nazi party in Germany used music to promote their propaganda, the social impact of music’s ability to influence a society’s perceptions can be examined. With the intent of improving music pedagogy, the purpose of this research was to examine how the Nazi party used music as a tool to promote their propaganda. The particular problems of this study were to: (1) analyze how music can emotionally impact people in order to influence perceptions; (2) examine how timbre is used impact an audience emotionally; and (3) construct a lesson plan with the objective of exploring how music influences perceptions. …

Music Of The Protestant Reformation: A Pedagogical Analysis Of Hymns, Hattie H. Bays

During the Protestant Reformation (1517-1600) reformers influenced music through the progression of Roman Catholic to Protestant principles. With the intent of improving music pedagogy, the purpose of this research is to investigate the music of the Protestant Reformation (1517-1600). Problems addressed in this research include: 1) to trace the origins of the Lutheran, Calvinist, and Anglican Church, 2) to discuss protestant reform as it relates to music, and 3) to identify reformation hymns included in the Disciples of Christ, Southern Baptist, Methodist, Lutheran, and Presbyterian hymnals.

Flow, also referred to as being “in the zone,” is a state of total absorption in an activity where an individual’s risk and skill are in balance. This mental state is sought after by many musicians for its positive effect on performance. Flow has been described as leading to a loss of self-awareness, changes in the perception of time, the ability to play effortlessly, a sense of calm, and confidence. Relational Power, Music, and Identity: The Emotional Efficacy of Congregational Song

The power of congregational song to unify (or divide) people along various lines is well documented. Yet, how this process of uniting or dividing is accomplished has proven necessarily difficult to document. This paper examines the complex and polyvalent factors that contribute to the meaningfulness of congregational music making, seeking to offer a synthetic, conceptual framework with which to engage this often murky milieu.

Employing interdisciplinary research techniques drawn from sociology, ritual studies, and ethnomusicology, I construct a conceptual framework with which to understand the profoundly formative power of …
