The Effectiveness Of Music Therapy To Reduce Agitation Among Persons With Alzheimer’S Disease, Caroline Mazon

According to the Alzheimer’s Association (2016), Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is diagnosed every 66 seconds resulting in this disease being the 6^th leading cause of death in the United States. Among other signs and symptoms, agitation is one of the most challenging symptoms that patients and caregivers must try to control using nonpharmacological therapies or prescribed pharmacological treatments. Among many professions, music therapy has been used to specifically lower the levels of agitation in AD patients. Live music, “sing a long’s”, using instruments, and listening to a song of the patients’ choice have all been shown to reduce agitation behaviors …

The song, “Somos Mas Americanos” is a work of art, and every single one of its lyrics is tied to a history about my experiences, my family’s experiences, and the experiences of countless others. Lyrics like those in “Somos Mas Americanos” touch people’s souls and pierce their hearts because it speaks to the socioeconomic, racial hierarchy, racially biased politics, and laws against immigrant workers like myself in the U.S. Further than that, it educates listeners about the U.S./Mexican War and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, where México lost its territory to the U.S., which explains the heated controversy surrounding the …

Leading The Field Of Music Through Three Premieres At Sfa, Brad Meyer

In the fall of 2016, I gave premiere performances of three new works for solo percussionist with electronics: Pulsar, The Taos Hum, and Ojibwe Song. I was the consortium director for Ojibwe Song, and I was a consortium member for Pulsar and The Taos Hum. Each piece utilized electronic audio components that accompanied solo percussion instruments: Ojibwe Song was written for vibraphone, Pulsar was written for concert snare drum, and The Taos Hum was written for timpani. Methodology: As a 6th grade band student, I always had difficulty taking in enough air to play my flute. I was always told to take in a deep breath, but never taught how to do so. Breathing can be overlooked in the beginner band classroom, so I decided to do some research and make a compilation of different exercises that all musicians can do.

When I was selected to participate in a performance of Ionisation with the SFA Percussion Ensemble, the conductor, Dr. Meyer, explained the compositional process Edgard Varèse went through in order to write the piece. Hearing this inspired me to dig deeper into the composition to discover how much Ionisation impacted the world of percussion. After finding out it was the first true percussion ensemble piece ever written, I was inspired to see how it shaped the world of percussion after its debut.
