Music, Politics, And Sociality: Ethnic Tensions And The Performance Of Gikuyu Nationalism, Peter Njagi Mwangi

This thesis examines how some selected Gikuyu popular music propagates ethnic tensions in Kenya by promoting Gikuyu nationalism at the expense of Kenyan nationalism. This music derives its themes from the historical period of the Mau Mau armed struggle against British colonists and connects this struggle with everyday experiences of the Gikuyu people. Memory and the performance of everyday life in this music solidifies the Gikuyu community as tied to a common destiny and distances other Kenyan communities from this destiny. Music And Race In The American West, William Steven Schneider

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis explores the complexities of race relations in the nineteenth century American West. The groups considered here are African Americans, Anglo Americans, Chinese, Mexican Americans, and Native Americans. In recent decades historians of the West have begun to tell the narratives of racial minorities. This study adopts the aims of these scholars through a new lens--music. Ultimately, this thesis argues that historians can use music, both individual songs and broader conceptions about music, to understand the complex and contradictory race relations of the nineteenth century west.

We consider parallels between words and music. We call a triple of structures, one verbal, one musical, and one mathematical, in which the mathematical structure is related to the verbal and musical structures, a generalised song. With the intention of exhibiting the potential of this form, we describe a generalised song called ‘Cube’.

The University of Houston Libraries sponsored an interdisciplinary event for students, faculty, and the public, titled the Artists’ Health and Wellness Colloquium and Resource Fair. Aspiring and working artists were instructed in how to maintain good health and to avoid overstressing their bodies as they practice their art. Scholars presented both historical and trending perspectives on the intersection of art and health science. The event was held in order to facilitate learning in two key research areas and to demonstrate the library's ability to bridge disparate disciplines and forge new partnerships with multiple academic units simultaneously. It is three pages of 16x17” Forest Brand sheet music paper from Music Writing Supplies in N.Y.C. The arrangement is done in pencil and has many special markings and notes by Peter Nero.

Franz Biebl’s Ave Maria is one of the most well-known small-scale choral pieces written in the latter half of the twentieth century. Since its introduction to American choirs in 1970, it has become an important part of the standard choral repertoire and is often performed perennially, especially at Christmas. It was integral to the rise in popularity of Chanticleer, the American professional male chorus, and remains closely associated with the ensemble thanks to it being recorded and published in the United States under Chanticleer’s auspices. Saxophonist Ralph Moore has performed with jazz luminaries such as Horace Silver, Roy Haynes, Freddie Hubbard, and J.J. Johnson, maintained a national television presence for fifteen years as a member of The Tonight Show Band, and has been a performing and recorded jazz artist for over thirty years. Even with this experience, Moore has not received the credit due his accomplishments.

Conference papers

The aim of this paper is to present techniques and results for identifying the key of Irish traditional music melodies, or tunes. Several corpora are used, consisting of both symbolic and audio representations. Monophonic and heterophonic recordings are present in the audio datasets. Some particularities of Irish traditional music are discussed, notably its modal nature. New key-profiles are defined, that are better suited to Irish music.

With this project, I have studied cello music written throughout many of the major musical eras in an attempt to discover the cello, specifically regarding playing style, technique, and tonal ability. The composers included in this project are Bach, Haydn, Dvořák, Pärt, and Amanti. Most of the major musical styles are represented, with a focus on baroque, classical, romantic, minimalism, and jazz. For my project, I learned and performed Bach Violin Sonata No. 2 in A minor on baroque violin and performed it in a community recital. In the Baroque era, the violin was strung with gut strings and played with a shorter, lighter bow. This instrument was ideal for the Baroque style of music which calls for quick articulations, and a more buoyant tone. But overtime the instrument evolved into the modern violin which has greater tension in steel strings tuned a half-step higher, and played with a longer, heavier bow. This allows the violin to produce a larger sound, but …

Robert Schumann is one of the most renowned composers of the romantic era, but only those who have studied his life realize that he also made enormous contributions to the world of literature. Through both his compositions and his own writings, Schumann was able to pay homage to many of his most beloved writers. My ORCA project was an in depth study of the Brazilian composer, Heitor Villa-Lobos. Villa-Lobos is revered in Brazil as the father of Brazilian classical music. What is not well understood, however, is the major contribution that Villa-Lobos made to music pedagogy and even to public policy related to music education in the public school systems. Many of the composer’s writings are inaccessible to the general public. As part of my project, I visited the Villa-Lobos Museum in Rio de Janeiro.
