The issue that this master’s thesis addresses is the relationship between music aptitude and academic achievement and its implications for recruiting, retaining, and placing effective music teachers. The purpose of this master’s thesis is to examine the relationship between academic achievement and stabilized music aptitude in high school seniors intending to begin a collegiate music program of study at Long Island University (LIU) Post. Aside from Alberto Ginastera and Astor Piazzolla there are very few known composers from Argentina. Both Ginastera and Piazzolla have written well-known pieces for flute; however, the known flute repertoire from Argentina is small in comparison to other countries. This is due to a number of factors including the high cost of publication in Argentina; because of this composers aren’t able to circulate their works. Pieces are discovered by word of mouth and rarely make it outside of the country. This research aims to collect and expose contemporary flute works by Argentine composers. UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

In January 2017, two UNO Opera Workshop scenes were selected to compete in the National Opera Scenes competition at the National Opera Association Convention in Santa Barbara, California. In this presentation the UNO students that represented UNO at this convention (Elijah Brown, Marcel Daly, Grace Kolbo, and Roni Shelley Perez) will discuss the process of selecting, assembling, and rehearsing scenes with UNO Opera Workshop, the mission of the National Opera Association, and their experiences competing in a national competition. Strangers In A Strange Land: Spanish Chant Manuscript Leaves In The Permanent Collection Of The University Of Northern Iowa Gallery Of Art, Alison Altstatt

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

This essay introduces three large manuscript leaves held in the Permanent Art Collection of the University of Northern Iowa. These folio-sized leaves originated in large Spanish choir books (or cantorales) from the late sixteenth through the early eighteenth century that held the texts and music of Gregorian Chant used in the Roman Catholic liturgy. These leaves are ‘strangers’ in the sense that their origin is unknown, stripped as they are of their material context in the book and their historical context in the institutions and rituals for which they were made.
