These handouts equip students with a visual representation of a powerful, time-tested strategy for harmonic dictation: the guide-tone method, first described by Rahn and McKay in 1988. Building on and extending the guide-tone method, the Do/Ti Test can be applied to diatonic harmonies, applied chords, chromatic predominants, sequences, and modulation.

This handout was created for music minors and non-music majors, most of whom enter my class with some music background. They typically have some understanding of simple meters like 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4. Compound Time is typically a difficult concept to teach, so this handout treats compound meter a bit more in-depth than some textbooks. This handout would be appropriate for not only music minors and non-music majors, but also remedial music theory classes for music majors or even Music Theory 1 classes. College and high school music students (whether majors or non-majors) likely know something already about note and rest values, what note gets the beat in some particular meter, and differences between undotted and dotted notes, but they often still have difficulty understanding them, dotted notes in particular. This handout will review this material and introduce an additional way to think about note values, setting the stage for additional approaches to meter, as rhythm and meter can often be difficult concepts to master.

This document provides a lesson plan and examples for Day 1 of a Schenkerian analysis course. Beginning with tonic prolongation paradigms that provide the structure of a hypothetical soprano-bass framework, the lesson unlocks a hidden Beethoven masterpiece lurking within the counterpoint. The plan also highlights how many melodic notes are "higher" than the soprano as well as how the theory incorporates the notion of tonal hierarchy.

"Twenty Questions" is a pedagogical resource focused on linear and dissonance-treatment analysis in common-practice music of the 18th and 19th centuries. This resource is designed to be utilized at the advanced high school and collegiate levels. It includes an explanation of contrapuntal analysis in a user-friendly Q&A format, a one-page summary sheet, four sample analyses with commentary, and four assignments with answer keys and extensive commentary for instructors. "Twenty Questions" was first developed as an explanatory guide for analyzing and interpreting Bach's Prelude in C major (WTC, book I). Many band directors find teaching horn to be intimidating. Through extensive research, this project has compiled some of the best exercises to help horn players improve and explains the rationale behind them. The written work contains information and descriptions about the different fundamentals that horn students need in order to be successful and develop good tone quality. The appendix includes examples of these exercises so that an educator has resources to teach his/her horn students. The fundamentals included are: breathing, buzzing, long tones, flow studies, lip slurs, and pitch.

The 2016-2017 Supplement issue contains handwritten answers on post-its to the question "What feels urgent to you in your studio? In your life? In the world?" These post-its were written at a grad-student gathering on the day after the 2016 US Presidential election, scanned and printed as a zine the next day, and distributed at open studios the day after that.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s Paulus, Op. 36 (1836) is one of the most important nineteenth-century contributions to the oratorio genre. Current scholarly understanding of the oratorio’s creation rests on three dissertations: Stuart Douglass Seaton identified, transcribed, and discussed some of the sketches for Paulus; Siegwart Reichwald examined the extant autographs for Paulus; and Jeffrey S. Sposato thoroughly documented the collaborative compilation of the libretto. None of these studies, however, provides a thorough examination of all the sketches for Paulus.

The idea behind The Character Studies of Time: A Two Movement Work for Orchestra should be reminiscent of, and is inspired by the character pieces of Robert Schumann’s Carnival. Although the works of Robert Schumann are originally short piano solos, the spirit of the character piece and all that it entails could be found throughout The Character Studies of Time. This symphony does not follow a strict form of 19th century writing, although the elements of romanticism can be found throughout the piece. Huai Opera, a category of Chinese opera performed in Shanghai as well as the Jiangsu and Anhui Provinces, has been a popular type of entertainment ever since its creation sometime in the nineteenth century. With the beginning of the twenty-first, the art form has begun to lose audiences, in part due to the changed economic circumstances, which no longer made it feasible to attend three- to four-hour performances, in part due to problems inherent in the genre, such as old-fashioned plots, the common, unrefined style of the libretto, and the inflexible use of role types, modes, and metrical types. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the practical adequacy of Duke’s (1994) rehearsal frame model as a “middle ground” perspective sequential outline of rehearsal events that lead to positive musical change. Observation and video recording of three accomplished high school band directors’ rehearsals generated data that allowed for a comparison between the model and actual practice. Results suggested that all parts of the original model need not be present, nor must they occur in the originally stated order for rehearsal frames to take place and direct students toward positive musical change. Concepts related to style change have been discussed thoroughly by theorists such as Leonard Meyer and others. In the case of Czech scholar, Antonín Dvořák, this change relates directly to his pentatonic style. While many musicologists suggest that the composer's travels to the United States in the early 1890's had a profound effect on the birth of his pentatonic style, this thesis posits that Dvořák's pentatonicism is apparent from even his earliest works. In examining evidence of this pentatonicism it becomes clear that, for Dvořák, there are two types: thematic and cadential. Thematic pentatonicism arises from themes of works or …

Samuel Barber’S Settings Of James Joyce’S Chamber Music: A Proposal For A Posthumous Song Cycle, Michael Pierre Laroche

Samuel Barber’s Opus 10 songs are some of his most well-known vocal works. These settings from Chamber Music by James Joyce were published in 1939, but posthumous research by biographer Barbara Heyman and a complete vocal recordings project by Thomas Hampson, Cheryl Studer, and John Browning led to the discovery and recording of ten additional songs, including three more Joyce settings. Schirmer published these Ten Early Songs around the same time as the Deutsche Grammophon. Research has shown the dates of composition to be within days of the published Opus 10 songs, but no other information on these songs exists …

The Experience Of Countertransference For Music Therapists When Working With Children With Developmental Disabilities, Carly Caprioli

The purpose of this study was to explore how music therapists recognized, acknowledged, utilized, and managed countertransference when working with children with developmental disabilities. Three board-certified music therapists (MT-BC), who had experience working with this population and experienced strong countertransference reactions in their work, openly shared their experiences during 45-60 minute audio-recorded in-person or telephone interviews. Phenomenological design was employed in this study. Essential themes that emerged from the data were identified and presented. Common themes included feelings of attachment, reexperiencing the past, fulfilling needs in the therapist, and experiencing deep concern for the client. Overall, this study concludes that …

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the repertoire of the cello from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras, and how the demands of virtuosity and lyricism changed the way composers wrote for the instrument. These demands contribute to the progression of the cello as it shifts from an accompanying instrument, to that of a solo one. We will look at operas by Monteverdi and Handel; solo works by Bach; and concertos by Boccherini, Haydn, and Schumann.
