Abinadi, at the time of this report, has not been completed. Originally the opera was intended to be finished with an orchestration requiring soloists, chorus and a small instrumental ensemble of not more than twenty players. Early on in the process of writing, Dr. Lawrence Vincent (head of BYU opera) expressed an interest in somehow staging the work, but was unsure that the funds would be available for an orchestra. In consideration of this and the prospect of having the work staged I decided to reduce the amount of instrumentalists to three- two pianists and a woodwind specialist (the cast …

Celebration

As a class, we are designing a research project for investigating how music teachers from counties in South-Central Pennsylvania use music from outside the Western canon (i.e. "world music"). We are performing a qualitative study by interviewing k-12 music teachers from school districts in South-Central Pennsylvania. Teachers may choose to participate in a focus group interview with other teachers or in one-on-one interviews. The focus group interview will not exceed two hours and the one-on-one interviews will not exceed an hour. Organizing An Honor Elementary Choir (Grades 4-6), Mona Jackson

Music Graduate Projects and Theses

The Elementary Honor Choir was for selected participants from Southwestern Idaho Elementary schools with a guest conductor, from Tacoma, Washington. Area Music Teachers supported this event by selecting students and preparing them in advance for the one-day rehearsal and performance. Through the process of preparation and rehearsals the students gained vocal development, further musicianship skills, camaraderie, and created an aesthetic musical experience. Attending elementary music teachers observed techniques for working with elementary choirs and details of teaching each song selection that they could take back to their individual classrooms to implement. MIRRORS is a cycle of songs composed for soprano voice and piano using five poems by Sylvia Plath. The work features the creation of a protagonist and tells a chronological story through the arrangement of the five poems colored and unified by the manipulation of a thematic twelve-tone row.

Narrative Structure In The Works Of Frederic Rzewski, Bree K. Guerra

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

This thesis examines the compositional strategies Rzewski applies to affect his audience’s expectations so that the experience of the work parallels the political and philosophical ideas within it. Employing musical narrative theory as a way to characterize the process of expectation that can guide the perception of musical meaning, I explore how Rzewski’s pieces support or reject interpretation through a musical dramatic trajectory in ways that reflect the concepts behind the work to argue that: 1) Rzewski’s early variation works follow a linear narrative whose sequence of musical transvaluation conveys dynamics of socio-political problems and suggest solutions through collective action; …
