Learning To Write A Large-Scale Orchestra Piece, Nathan Bowen, Murray Boren

As a student composer, I have one basic goal in mind: get as much experience writing for as many different instruments as possible. In assessing what would be most beneficial to my growth as a young composer, it became clear that writing a long piece for a large ensemble would be the right project. I proposed to write a ten minute piece for full orchestra.

The practice of using folk music in a classical music composition became a norm during the twentieth century. In a century when music of this genre was waining into the avante-guard, this technique was a change of pace in a different direction. Composers ranging from Bela Bartok (1881-1945) and Zoltan Kodaly (1882-1967) in Hungary to Gustov Holst (1874-1934) and Ralph Van Williams (1872-1945) in England embraced this concept not only as fodder for new compositions, but also as a way to preserve the music of their native lands. This program features music by composers who were enchanted by different idioms found in folk music. Michael Ellison and Antonín Dvořák were deliberate in their use of folk models. Melodies and textures that evoke Czech, American, and Turkish folk music play a central role in the respective musical identity of each composer.

-Heroines’ Journey- Emerging Story By Refugee Women During Group Analytic Music Therapy, Heidi Ahonen, Antoinetta Mongillo Desideri

Music Faculty Publications

There has been some evidence of the benefits of participating in group analytic music therapy with traumatized people. This pilot clinical project investigates the impact of a combination of narrative therapy and group analytic music therapy on refugee/newcomer women in Canada. An ongoing therapy group met for a period of 8 sessions, to share stories and feelings of past experiences and of resettlement. The focus of this group was emotional expression (verbal and musical). Musical listening, improvisation, art, writing, clay-work, and relaxation techniques were used. Several consistent themes re-emerged, including feelings around loneliness, fear guilt, and loss.

By the time of his death, John Stevens (1921–2002), emeritus professor of medieval and Renaissance literature at Cambridge University, had been working for over two decades on a study and edition of the trilingual repertory of song in medieval England from c.1150 to c.1350.1 The initial products of that research were themselves so lengthy and detailed that the scope of the whole endeavour appears to have been enormous, and it is understandable if immensely to be regretted that the undertaking remained unfinished in his lifetime.
