Music Therapy, Pain, And Anxiety In Short-Term Adult Inpatient Orthopedic Rehabilitation: A Randomized Controlled Trial, John Marino

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of music therapy on pain and anxiety with older adult orthopedic patients in short-term inpatient rehabilitation. Pain and anxiety are common conditions faced by older adults that can hinder progress in therapy. Ten participants were randomly selected to music therapy or control group. Pain and anxiety levels were measured pre and post intervention, for eight sessions. A music therapy questionnaire addressing interventions for pain and anxiety management was administered to the experimental group following the last session. The period after the 1789 French Revolution was one of turbulence, musically, socially, culturally and politically. The violence against both people and property meant that the nineteenth century was a time of renewal and regrowth. At all times this was uncertain as numerous political upheavals took place as the French attempted to define their future direction. This research will trace the development and productivity of Cyrillus Kreek (1889-1962) as a composer of choral folk songs and his influence on Estonian culture. The core of the study provides a chronological examination of Kreek’s published choral folk song arrangements. Kreek’s work is the summation of direct and indirect influences in his life, such as Estonian folk music and the Estonian national awakening that began in the late nineteenth century and flourished in the early decades of the twentieth century; conversely, his music, along with that of his contemporaries, impacted the process of defining what it meant to be …

This research explores whether subjects have a preference for an audio-only (AO) presentation or an audio-visual (AV) presentation of the same piece of music. The research was conducted in two parts as a pilot study and as a main study. In the pilot study, the adult subjects were directed to the website YouTube where they listened to an audio and an audio-visual recording. During each presentation, the subjects ranked segments at 30-second intervals on a Likert scale from strongly-dislike to strongly-like. The well-known horseracing ballad ‘Skewball’ has been widely documented in oral tradition on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as on numerous English broadside printings. It recounts the tale of a mid-eighteenth-century horserace held at The Curragh of Kildare, in which a heavily-backed mare is comprehensively beaten by a relatively unknown skewbald gelding leaving the mare’s owner — along with much of the assembled onlookers — significantly out of pocket. The ballad became widely popularised in North America where it was first published in a song book in 1826 (Benton 1826:3-4). It was later subsumed into African-American song tradition, …

Two of the most often used methods that we, as humans, use to identify with each other are language and music. The Omoro Soushi, compiled in the early 1600s, is a compilation of poems and songs in the Okinawan language that were used to create music. It shows that a relationship does exist between the language and the subsequently created music.

My Chinese music study experience began with touring China with the BYU Chamber Orchestra in April of 2011. This tour was a very rich and unique two weeks filled with some of the most beautiful sights in Asia. The Great Wall of China, The Forbidden City, the structures and vastness of the palace left me with a sense of awe at the historical depth and remarkable achievements of the ancient Chinese culture. We performed concerts in Shanghai, Tianjin, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, and Beijing and were very warmly received in all of the venues.

My goal was to expose the musicality inherent in urban environments through a musical composition involving sound recordings made in New York City. Specifically, I used the sophisticated software available to me in the BYU Electronic Music Studio to identify the specific frequencies (pitches) and rhythmic patterns found in my field recordings. Afterwards I would present my findings with electronics and live instruments in a way that exposed these musical traits present in my recordings.

The group, led by Dr. Brent Talbot has a packed itinerary. Much of the trip will be devoted to working with a local gamelan teacher to learn about different styles of the drumming art. Alternatives to sedative medications, such as music, may alleviate the anxiety associated with ventilatory support.

Objective:

To test whether listening to self-initiated patient-directed music (PDM) can reduce anxiety and sedative exposure during ventilatory support in critically ill patients.

Design, Setting, and Patients:

Randomized clinical trial that enrolled 373 patients from 12 intensive care units (ICUs) at 5 hospitals in the Minneapolis-St Paul, Minnesota, area receiving acute mechanical ventilatory support for respiratory failure between September 2006 and March 2011. Of the patients included in the study, 86% were white, 52% were female, and the mean (SD) age …

This quasi-experimental design investigates critical thinking through music compositions of sixth grade general music students. Through the use of the Cornell Critical Thinking Test Level X, scores were compared between the treatment (music composition) and control (regular music classroom curriculum) groups. Participants (N=193) were in eight in-tact classes. Each class was randomly assigned to four groups: (1) Experimental Group A (Pre/treatment/post); (2) Control Group B (pre/post); (3) Experimental Group C (treatment/post); (4) Control Group D (post). T-tests and ANOVAs were utilized to analyze results and to determine statistical significances. While treatment was determined statistically significant for one of the four …

Urban schools, and the students and teachers within, are often characterized by a metanarrative of deficit and crisis, causing the complex realities of urban education to remain unclear behind a wall of assumptions and stereotypes. This thesis examines the practices of string quartet modification implemented by three post-Soviet Eurasian composers: Franghiz Ali-Zadeh (Azerbaijan), Vache Sharafyan (Armenia), and Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky (Uzbekistan). After an introduction to the geography of the region and the biographies of the composers, their works containing modified string quartet configurations are examined within three distinct modification practices. These practices consist of the addition of outside instruments, the addition of electronic components, and the alteration of performance practice. The purpose of this project is to create a system that automatically converts monophonic music into its MIDI equivalent. Automatic pitch recognition allows for numerous commercial applications, including automatic transcription and digital storage of live performances. It is also desirable to be able to take an audio signal as an input and create a MIDI equivalent score because the MIDI information can be used to replace the original audio signal sounds with any sound the user would like. For example, if a piano composition is entered into the system, the resulting MIDI out could be used to trigger guitar samples. …
