Graduate Recital In Piano, Tana Denning

On the 22nd of February, 2013, Tana Denning presented a half-recital in partial completion of her master's degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy. The recital was held at 6pm in Davis Hall at the University of Northern Iowa. Pieces on the program included two preludes by Debussy, Italian Concerto by Bach, an original arrangement of a traditional Irish melody, and Scherzo No. 4 by Chopin. The second half of Ms. Denning's recital requirement was spent on a pedagogical project regarding the use of folk music in piano lessons. This project is outlined at the end of the abstract.

Graduate Viola Recital, Andrea Lynn Alert

Andrea Alert performed a graduate viola recital at six o'clock in the evening on Friday, March 29, 2013, in the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center's Davis Hall. Pianist Serena Hou collaborated with Ms. Alert to present selected works by various composers. The program opened with Johann Sebastian Bach's Sonata in G Major, BWV 1027, followed by Gregor Piagiorsky's arrangement of Franz Joseph Haydn's Divertimento in D Major, followed by the first movement of Paul Hindemith's Der Schwanendreher. The program ended with Sonata for Viola and Piano, op. 22 by Marion Bauer.

Interactive Musical Partner: A System For Human/Computer Duo Improvisations, Jeffrey Vernon Albert

This research is centered on the creation of a computer program that will make music with a human improviser. This Interactive Musical Partner (IMP) is designed for duo improvisations, with one human improviser and one instance of IMP, focusing on a freely improvised duo aesthetic. IMP has Musical Personality Settings (MPS) that can be set prior to performance, and these MPS guide the way IMP responds to musical input from the human. The MPS also govern the probability of particular outcomes from IMP’s creative algorithms. IMP uses audio data feature extraction methods to listen to the human partner, and react …

The recital was performed at 6 p.m. in Davis Hall in the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center at the University of Northern Iowa. This recital was given in partial fulfillment of the Master of Music degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy. The program consisted of works by Scarlatti, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninoff, and Mozart. Johannes Brahms' Sonata in F minor, no. 1 opus 120 is a very important piece in clarinet repertoire. The piece was originally composed for Richard Muhlfeld, a clarinet virtuoso in Brahms' time. This sonata has been performed and recorded by many musicians. Each individual that performs the sonata creates his or her own unique interpretation of the work. Public school bands teach students valuable artistic expression as they work together to learn and perform music in instrumental ensembles. Music educators who claim this purpose need to sustain student interest and involvement in band to continue the art form, because band is an elective course in which students join voluntarily. Factors that motivate students to participate in band include the intrinsic desire for music and the extrinsic stimuli for participation, including a large emphasis on competitions.

The purpose of this thesis was to find musical trends that exist within popular Contemporary Christian Music, and to compose an original song reflecting those musical trends. The invention of the synthesizer meant the possibility of achieving virtually any sound in one mechanism, a superbly convenient device for musical creativity. Perhaps the perfect space for this approval of sound creativity was in the modern electronic film score. The synthesizer also flourished in popular music immediately following its emergence, but a common form began to solidify itself among synthesizer music. Shortly after, improvements in electronic instrument technology led to the democratization of electronic music and equipment, ultimately leading to electronic music as the new mainstream.

The Western North Pacific Ocean (WNP) produces more frequent and intense tropical cyclones (TC) than anywhere else in the world, and these storms greatly impact society. This study examines synoptic scale atmospheric patterns and their effects on landfalling typhoons in Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam using composite analysis at upper and mid-levels of the atmosphere, as well as analyzing teleconnection impacts on tropical cyclone frequency, duration and intensity.

Examined Best Track data (1946-2010) shows an increased likelihood of Taiwan landfalls earlier in the season, Japan landfalls mid-season, and Vietnam landfalls towards the end of the typhoon season. The formation locations also …

"This case study investigated perceptions on process and outcomes of applying the Alexander Technique in vocal production. The setting was the campus of a state university in the United States of America. The perceptions of three levels of participants were investigated- a master Alexander Technique teacher, a collegiate vocal professor and three undergraduate music students, all experienced in the Alexander Technique in vocal production. Data collection included interviews with the participants; documentation in student practice journals, and field observations. This study uses qualitative methods of narrative interviewing and thematic analysis of narrative to explore the communicative phenomenon of youth punk concert fan story-telling. It explores how the phenomenon functions to construct the subculture of the I-57 youth punk concert fan music scene. Through methods of thematic analysis of narrative, the study works to deconstruct numerous implicit understandings and taken-for-granted assumptions that drive and govern interactions among youth punk music fans participating within the I-57 youth punk music scene. The Kay Wildman Collection explores the history of music in Huntington, WV. This collection consists of oral histories, photographs, newspaper clippings, and research materials. In most of the oral histories you will find a copy of the interview on a CD and a typed outline of the interview. A diary by Robert Grant, a member of numerous musical groups in Huntington, can also be found in this collection. This diary covers the period of time Grant was a student at Marshall University with some additional entries that go beyond that period of time.

After composer Edison Vasilievich Denisov (1929–1996) finished his graduate work at the Moscow Conservatoire, he launched into an independent examination of composers whose music had been banned by the Soviet authorities during his conservatory years (1951–1959). It was during this time in his compositional development that he composed his Sonata for Flute and Piano (1960). The first section of this document provides a biographical summary of Edison Denisov and the circumstances surrounding the composition of the flute sonata. The Huntington Symphony Orchestra Collection focuses mainly on the EFFORT (Education For Future Orchestra Related Tradition) Program. The EFFORT Program went from school to school performing for students, and teaching them about the instruments. The purpose of this study is to provide a transcription and musical analysis of Ravi Shankar’s Morning Love for Western flute, sitar, tabla and tanpura. This document provides a discussion of Ravi Shankar’s biography, a theoretical context for the piece including an introduction to Hindustani musical characteristics, and prescriptive transcriptions of Morning Love in Western and Indian notation. A detailed analysis of the piece applies the Hindustani classical musical characteristics discussed. Morning Love is one of only two pieces for Western flute composed by Ravi Shankar as a result of his collaboration with French flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal. Prior to this …
