The Relationship Between Collegiate Band Members’ Preferences Of Teacher Interpersonal Behavior And Perceived Self-Efficacy, Natalie Steele Royston

Research & Issues in Music Education

The purposes of this study were to describe collegiate band members’ preferred teacher interpersonal behaviors and perceptions of self-efficacy based on the gender, year in college, instrument, and major and to measure the relationship between preferences of interpersonal teacher behavior and self-efficacy scores. The sample (N = 1,020) was composed of band members at 12 universities from different regions of the United States. Participants completed the Teacher Interaction Preference Questionnaire (TIPQ) and the Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (SEQ). Descriptive statistics were calculated for each of the questionnaires. The monograph, entitled The Making of W2: Musical Compilation and Intention in the Shadow of Notre Dame. is a study of the creation of the thirteenth-century Parisian manuscript 1099, known as W2 and preserved in the Herzog-August-Bibliothek in Wolfenbuttel, Germany.

The rise of explicit rap music in the 1990's brought with it a challenge that has not been seen until today: what becomes of listeners who, once past their adolescent years, become responsible, successful adults yet choose to keep explicit rap music in their lives? This thesis examined that question to find that some high-achieving adults continue to listen to the controversial form of music, while simultaneously separating themselves from the images associated with the music. A Journey Over Land And Sea is a 15-minute composition for orchestra. It comprises two movements which contrast in form and musical language. Work consisted of composing, orchestrating, scoring, and preparing the piece for a performance by the Connecticut College Orchestra. Working with the orchestra at rehearsals required close collaboration with the conductor and provided opportunities to revise parts of the piece and make decisions about interpretation. A Journey Over Land And Sea was premiered at an honors thesis concert on 4/18/13 and performed again at the Connecticut College Orchestra spring concert on 5/2/13.

When a sample that is tired of suffering meets another sample that is also tired of suffering, it’s time to consider that intermodulation may suddenly happen. When there is a sample that sorely misses another sample, and this other sample does not understand it, just let that new intermodulation happen, even if clipping becomes unavoidable. How silly I was, trying in vain to rationally understand things about sampling that no one can actually explain. Come, let us try now, only a new use can twist the old one.

About the Exhibit

America’s Music: A Film History of Our Popular Music from

Blues to Bluegrass to Broadway brought together scholars, musicians, students and community members to gain new perspectives on American music, culture and history. The program featured screenings of documentary films on six uniquely American genres: blues and gospel, Broadway, jazz, bluegrass and country, rock ‘n’ roll, and mambo and hip hop. Scholars will gave presentations to contextualize the films and led discussions following the screenings.

Do You Have The Personality For Teaching Music?, David W. Snyder

Six different classes of music education majors enrolled in a large Midwestern university were asked to take an online personality survey and then were tracked through graduation. Personality types, as determined by the Myers- Briggs Personality Type test, were then examined for how they related to choice of major and attrition within the music education degree program. The hope was to combine these findings with other research done on personality and get a snap shot of what personality types are drawn to teaching choir and further what types persist through graduation.
