When Words Fail, Music Speaks, Hannah Williams '12

Outstanding Ethnographic Research Projects

Vocal performers are distinctive due to the self-discipline that necessarily accompanies having one's voice be one's instrument, as all life choices directly affect a vocalist's ability to sing. Vocalists are also united by a strong feeling of self-confidence that is essential in a field that is highly competitive, subjective, and personal. Furthermore, while a love of music is a common theme for many musicians, vocal performers are distinguished by both the emotional and physical connection that they must forge with their music.

Interview With Michael "Mike Severance" Mena, Michael Mena, Michael Treviño

Border Music Oral History Interviews

The interview features Michael Mena, vocalist for the death metal band Severance, reflecting on his experiences in the scene. He describes the differences between U.S. and Mexican shows, noting Mexico’s passionate fans, limited equipment, and the challenges of border violence and passport regulations. Mena contrasts the intensity and appreciation of Mexican audiences with the more subdued American crowds while also discussing socio-economic struggles and cultural dynamics he observed abroad, including in Ukraine. Toward the end, he shares political views on borderland issues

Symphony In Three Marches, Nels D. Daily

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

This symphony is in three movements and lasts about 25 minutes. The form of the music for each movement has been influenced by the marches of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Edward Elgar, John Philip Sousa, and Dimtri Shostakovich.

The first movement is in a march form related to the music of John Philip Sousa: 1st strain, 2nd strain, trio, dogfight, trio dogfight, trio. This form has been adapted to merge with sonata form. Broad fanfares play a central role in the formal outline. They introduce formal sections similar to Beethoven's slow introduction in the first movement of the "Pathetique" sonata acting …

Timeline Of Creating The Original Performance Work, A Scotch Verdict, Cynthia Goatley, Rebecca Burkhardt

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

We first conceived the idea of writing a hybrid piece containing elements of opera and musical theatre in 1998. The musical, as we now call it, is based on Lillian Faderman’s Scotch Verdict, which revolves around the true story of Jane Pirie and Marianne Woods who ran a boarding school for girls in 1810 Edinburgh, Scotland. The accusation of one of their students, Jane Cumming, illegitimate grandchild of wealthy and powerful Dame Cumming Gordon, brought ruin upon the school and the schoolmistresses. Jane Cumming had accused the schoolmistresses of committing “unnatural acts” together. This tale told to Dame Gordon …
