The contents of this thesis will consist of six chapters, one for each piece of repertoire conducted. Chapters will include biographical information on the composer, background of the work, rehearsal strategies, suggested conducting considerations, suggested listening, and a conclusion of the piece. It will also include a recital DVD of the pieces performed by various ensembles over a three year period.

Music is very closely related to the social norms and views held during the time the music was created. It often reflects these social norms and views and helps to perpetuate them. Mozart’s operas were no exception, and they helped to perpetuate norms and views regarding women. Mozart’s operas were written during the eighteenth century, and they express the socially accepted views about women that were held at this time.

Pitch Perception In Changing Harmony, Cecilia Taher

The role of harmony in the definition of tonality provides theoretical framework for the hypothesis that harmonic context affects pitch perception. In tonal music, the stability of individual notes depends on the harmonic setting. It seems then reasonable to expect harmonically guided variations in the cognitive representation of tones. With the purpose of enhancing current models of pitch perception, this thesis proposes an empirical investigation of the effects of harmony on pitch sensitivity. In two experiments, nonmusicians performed a same/different discrimination task on two pitches (a reference tone RT and a comparison tone CT) that were embedded in a melody …

Metrical Transition And Resolution In The Music Of Blindside, Patrick Sallings

Meter in rock cannot always be determined by the backbeat. I have adapted metrical analysis models developed by Harald Krebs and others to the music of the rock band Blindside to address the issue of identifying logical metrical schemes in a particular repertoire of rock music. Blindside's use of metrical dissonance necessitates expansion of the existing analytical models in that the meter in some of their songs is ambiguous at times, allowing for a period of transition from one metrical scheme to another. During the mid-1990s, against the background of a dizzyingly unstable economy and a corrupt and transitional political climate, a new genre of popular music rose to prominence in Bulgaria and came to be viewed by many as a complex symbol of this new, post-communist society. Although it has been given several names in its short history, this genre is most commonly known today as chalga, a designation that has a variety of connotations, both purely musical and purely derogatory. For much of history, there has been a long-standing belief of the superiority of Western art music; that it is more natural, complex, expressive, and meaningful than other musics. This standpoint is being challenged more than ever as advances in musicology, ethnomusicolgy, global communication and media bring musics of other nations and cultures to the doorstep of the American people.
