When Olivier Messiaen submitted his work Le Merle Noir as the 1952 Paris Conservatoire examination piece for flute, he utilized a number of significant compositional techniques. At the time of its writing, Messiaen was in a phase of his oeuvre which included not only traditional methods of composition, but experimentation with more modern methods, such as dodecaphony, total serialism, and the use of birdsong as important thematic material. In Le Merle Noir, the amalgam of these methods results in a work that seems to have all of the wild and chaotic aspects of nature, but in reality has been painstakingly …

While familiarly with Bach’s well-known themes exists in the general aspects of contemporary lifestyle, providing exposure to the choral works of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) presents a particular challenge to the high school choral director. The purpose of this investigation is to provide a resource guide for the performance of choral masterworks of J. S. Bach at the high school level. The typical practice in flute pedagogy is to start teaching the beginning flute student at approximately ten years of age. When compared to many other instrument disciplines, such as violin and piano, this is a relatively late starting age. The delay is primarily due to the large size and weight of the modern orchestral flute, as well as its lung capacity requirements. Christoph Graupner (1680-1763), court composer and Kapellmeister for Landgrave Ernst Ludwig of Hessen-Darmstadt, was a prolific and highly regarded composer and an esteemed performer during his lifetime and was a contemporary and colleague of Telemann, Bach, and Handel. The quantity of Graupner’s works number among the highest of Baroque composers, with over 1,800 compositions. Much as his contemporary Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750), Graupner and his works were largely forgotten following his death. However, unlike Bach, whose music enjoyed a widespread revival during the early nineteenth century that continues to this day, the life and music of Christoph Graupner has remained …

In observing bands or orchestras at all levels of performance proficiency, very often it becomes apparent to the onlooker that certain sections of instruments tend to be made up of a greater number of either male or female performers. Utah State University’s Music Therapy Program has a close association with the Community Abuse Prevention Services Agency (CAPSA) located in Logan, UT. CAPSA provides a variety of services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault including a fourteen-week women’s support group designed to help victims work through the therapeutic process of naming, accepting, and moving forward from the abuse. Fourteen modules have currently been written and compiled into a manual for these sessions. Once finished, the manual will be published and distributed to other abuse prevention agencies throughout the nation for use in leading women support groups similar to …

The purpose of this research is to present an organized account of the life, career and music of this prominent American symphonic conductor. James Anderson DePreist is an African American conductor/composer, educator and spokesman for the Americans with Disabilities who has achieved prominence in the symphonic field while overcoming many obstacles, both physical and social. In addition to having have conducted orchestras all over the world, this maternal nephew of famed contralto Marian Anderson is best known as the arranger/composer of Theme For The Cosby Show, the 1988–1989 season, as recorded by the Oregon Symphony Orchestra.

The relationship between Sherlock Holmes and John Watson is complicated and certainly untraditional. Some theorize that Holmes is merely using Watson while Watson desperately seeks his affection. Others theorize that they have an unrequited homosexual relationship. However, it is Holmes’ unemotional nature paired with Watson’s fierce loyalty and admiration that creates a new and unique type of relationship. Many would define friendship as an emotional bond, but with Holmes, this is impossible. That does not mean, however, that he is incapable of deeply caring for Watson. This document was constructed using a qualitative research approach to discuss and illuminate the various compositional techniques used by Frank Ticheli in his composition Cajun Folk Songs. The content will include a biographical background of Mr. Ticheli, documentation related to the Cajun Culture and Cajun Music, an analysis of Ticheli’s composition Cajun Folk Songs, and valuable information related to the rehearsal and performance of this work. The intent of the study is to shed light on the relevant aspects pertinent to the musical interpretation of the selected work for the conductor, the performer, and the listener.
