Between 1925 and 1928, the Hot Five, the incomparable Louis Armstrong and four seasoned practitioners of the burgeoning jazz style recorded fifty-five performances in Chicago for the OKeh label. Oddly enough, the quintet immortalized on vinyl with recent technology rarely performed as a unit in local nightspots. And yet, like other music now regarded as especially historic, their work in the studio summarized approaches of the past and set standards for the future.

Remarkable both for popularity among the members of the public and for influence on contemporary musicians, these recordings helped make "Satchmo" a familiar household name and ultimately …

Composer's Note: After the Fact has no specific extra-musical program however as I was writing the piece I was inspired by many thoughts on the age-old question of "what if?" By this I mean what would people do differently if they had known in the first place the outcome of a certain situation. While writing this piece I was specifically paying close attention to the news about the war and tensions that were taking place over in Iraq and the Middle East. Kyrie was written in a three part form reminiscent at the actual form of its namesake in the Catholic mass, however it has no programmatic basis. The number three is a primary organizational mechanism for this piece. Kyrie is based on the Eb dorian mode and contains a number of motives reminiscent of Gregorian chant.

Fanfare for the Black cat is a short comical work for brass quintet. It was inspired by a black cat that followed me home one night as I was walking through a park. As I reached my house, the cat vanished as suddenly as it had appeared. The piece is based on two motives which are spun out through the entire piece and intended to create a mysterious ambience.

This written document presents an introduction to the soprano songs by the Austro-American composer Eric Zeisl. Songs chosen comprise published songs (Der Schäfer, Die Fünf Hühnerchen, Vergiss Mein Nicht, Vor Meinem Fenster) as well as unpublished songs (Der Briefmark, Der Tag Erwacht, Immer Leiser Wird Mein Schlummer, Kommst Du Nicht Herein, Reiterliedchen). The thesis begins with a brief biographical outline of the composer and a discussion of his song style and his musical influences. Subsequent chapters include a discussion of the poets used in the chosen songs, as well as an analysis of these songs. Appendices provide translations, IPA transcriptions, …

In the form of a handbook, this dissertation is predominantly directed at Western flute players interested in world music, the shaktthachi or bansttri, or who may be looking for advice on playing Japanese or Indian inspired works. Performing music that is not in the normal Western classical idiom can sometimes be a daunting experience for a flautist. By looking first at the background musical and cultural aspects relative to each country and then delving deeper into the finer details of characteristic nuances and techniques, the flautist can then take the music to a higher level.
