Robert Schumann composed numerous pieces that are accessible to the intermediate piano student. In addition to his well-known Album für die Jugend, Op. 68, certain pieces from the Albumblätter, Op. 124 also provide excellent pedagogical material. Albumblätter is one of the last collections published during the composer’s life. The collection contains works written as early as 1832 and as late as 1845, spanning much of Schumann’s creative lifetime. He discarded several of the compositions from earlier sets, such as Carnaval Op. 9 and Kinderscenen Op. 15. Others were composed for a projected collection, XII Burle, which Schumann later abandoned. Claudio Monteverdi’s operas and madrigals, and their importance in the development of Western Music has been researched and discussed by many scholars. His sacred output, particularly the solo motets, is not as thoroughly researched. This study briefly explores Monteverdi’s life with emphasis on his sacred output, and discusses his development of text expression in the solo motets that echo the expressive progression found in his madrigals and operas. The purpose of this study is to gain a insight into the realm of solo jazz vibraphone performance through the transcription and analysis of Gary Burton's improvised solo on "Blue Monk" by Thelonious Monk, recorded on the Album Face to Face with pianist Makoto Ozone. Gary Burton is the inventor of the "Burton grip," a four-mallet grip used for vibraphone performance. His individual approach to playing the vibraphone and highly developed technique seem unattainable for many students of percussion. This descriptive case study details music therapy with one five-year-old boy named Yitzchak who presented with autistic spectrum disorder. A literature review of aspects of a developmental skill, joint attention, is presented as a basis for the work. It defines joint attention and communication, as well as music’s effect on these skills within a developmental, individual-difference, relationship-based philosophy. An investigation was conducted to test music’s efficacy as a stimulus to increase joint attention behaviors and therefore increase language output. The results show positive trends of increases in eye contact and musical/communicative behaviors in a short-term therapy sequence of sessions as …

Light the Way is based on seven distinct poems written by Joshua Ziemann. I was compelled to write a song cycle based on Ziemann's texts after reading through his poetry and seeing great possibilities for musical settings. The poems that I chose to set are not concretely related to one another; however they are related on an abtract level. The texts in many respects, represent a sense of searching for purpose and meaning in life and our environment. I chose the title, Light the Way, in order to reflect this sentiment.

By this I mean what would people do differently if they had known in the first place the outcome of a certain situation. Acoustic Exploration For Prepared Piano, Jesse Schaar

The strings which correspond to the circled pitches are to be prepared with dimes. These notes on the piano have three strings per note, so the dime may be wedged between the three strings. The pitches created will be lower than the written pitch. The target created pitches for d, e# and f% are a, c# and d respectively. The dimes may be adjusted along the length of the string to achieve these target pitches. The strings which correspond to these circled pitches (which are an octave above where written) should be prepared with the rubber insulation of a wire. …

Kyrie was written in a three part form reminiscent at the actual form of its namesake in the Catholic mass, however it has no programmatic basis. The number three is a primary organizational mechanism for this piece. Kyrie is based on the Eb dorian mode and contains a number of motives reminiscent of Gregorian chant.

People Movement was written for the second session of the 2006 Interlochen Composer Institute. The piece derives its motives and rhythms from the sounds of public and private transportation in Chicago, IL. The opening repeating motive in the bassoon which serves as a rhythmic base for the work represents a group of motorcycle riders revving their motorcycles while sitting idle in a parking lot." Fanfare for the Black cat is a short comical work for brass quintet. It was inspired by a black cat that followed me home one night as I was walking through a park. As I reached my house, the cat vanished as suddenly as it had appeared. The piece is based on two motives which are spun out through the entire piece and intended to create a mysterious ambience.

Vermont was inspired by the great amount of time that I have spent in the state of Vermont visiting with my family. The state of Vermont has always been a very important part of my life and to an extent I consider it my second home. Didactic learning relates to philosophical, theoretical, and/or practical information that is communicated via lecture, discussion, and modeling.

Experiential learning refers to the students' firsthand experiences in the learning/therapy group process that accompanies didactic instruction. In this form of learning, students have opportunities to observe, participate in, co-lead, lead, and verbally process improvisation experiences.
