Elementary Music Assessment And Report Card Practices In Livingston County, Michigan, Jennifer R. Patterson
Elementary Music Assessment And Report Card Practices In Livingston County, Michigan, Jennifer R. Patterson
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This descriptive study explored how elementary schools in the five public school districts in Livingston County, Michigan, report musical achievement to parents. The purposes were to examine what is assessed in K–4 music classrooms, what grading systems are used to report the assessment data, and how school districts use report cards to convey information about students’ musical progress to parents. The study involved questioning district curriculum directors, elementary school principals, and music teachers with response rates above 70%. In addition, music report cards were reviewed and a small sample of parents were surveyed. Analysis of descriptive statistics revealed that elementary …
Musical Pattern Design Using Contour Icons, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle
Musical Pattern Design Using Contour Icons, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle
Conference papers
This paper considers the use of Contour Icons in the design and implementation of musical patterns, for the purposes of detection and recognition. Research work had endeavoured to deliver musical patterns that were both distinct and memorable, and to this end a set of basic melodic shapes were introduced using a Sonification application called TrioSon that had been designed for the purpose. Existing work in the field (such as that concerning Earcon design) has considered the mechanisms by which patterns may be made distinctive, but it is argued that separate consideration must be given to the method of making such …
Harmonically Combined Contour Icons For Concurrent Auditory Display, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle
Harmonically Combined Contour Icons For Concurrent Auditory Display, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle
Conference papers
This paper considers the harmonic combination of basic melodic shapes known as contour icons in concurrent auditory displays. Existing work in the field (such as that concerning earcons) has considered the combination of patterns designed using low level cognitive features, and so effective streaming is difficult. This work investigates means by which musical patterns with high level cognitive features (such as contour) representing data values can be rendered concurrently, so that multiple data sets can be effectively conveyed using an auditory display. The detection and comprehension of harmonically combined contour icons was tested in comparison to those combined uniquely (non …

Brazilian Nationalistic Elements In The Brasilianas Of Osvaldo Lacerda, Maria Jose Bernardes Di Cavalcanti
Brazilian Nationalistic Elements In The Brasilianas Of Osvaldo Lacerda, Maria Jose Bernardes Di Cavalcanti
LSU Major Papers
Brazilian composer Osvaldo Lacerda (b. 1927) is an important figure in the Brazilian nationalist school of composition, following the tradition of Camargo Guarnieri. This study examines Brazilian nationalistic elements in the Brasilianas, a series of twelve suites for piano composed by Lacerda. These piano suites, written between 1965 and 1993, each comprise four movements, utilizing a wide variety of genres. This monograph is divided into three chapters. The first chapter provides a background on Brazilian history and Brazilian musical nationalism. The second chapter consists of information about Lacerda. The third chapter contains historical aspects and musical characteristics of the genres …

John Coltrane: Jazz Improvisation, Performance, And Transcription, Garry J. Bertholf
John Coltrane: Jazz Improvisation, Performance, And Transcription, Garry J. Bertholf
Honors Theses
John William Coltrane (1926-1967) was a prominent African-American jazz saxophonist and prolific composer. The evolution of his mature career seems, from my perspective, to fall roughly into the following periods: (1) “Vertical” (ca.1955-59), (2) “Modal” (ca.1960-63) and (3) “Avant-garde” (ca. 1964-67). During this entire 12-year interlude, the artist was moving in several different directions.
Unfortunately, his working band was not well documented. However, a recording of this group in concert at Carnegie Hall in 1957 was discovered and issued in 2005 by Blue Note Records. The Blue Note compilation is the first and only full-length high-quality recording of the group. …

The “Mozart Effect”: Musicological And Scientific Perspectives, Donald J. Polzella, Richard P. Benedum
The “Mozart Effect”: Musicological And Scientific Perspectives, Donald J. Polzella, Richard P. Benedum
Psychology Faculty Publications
The “Mozart effect” suggests that merely listening to Mozart’s music enhances human cognitive processing. Although the “Mozart effect” has generated a great deal of attention since it was first proposed, replicating the Mozart effect has proven elusive, and it has been argued that the effect is attributable not to the music, but rather to changes in arousal and mood. Even so, it may be that the music of Mozart increases arousal and improves mood to a greater degree than do other stimuli, including the music of other composers.
