The Inaugural Totally Huge New Music Festival Conference was a bold initiative by its partner presenters Tura New Music and the Faculty of Communications and Creative Industries, Edith Cowan University, Perth, including the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. In an arts milieu which is increasingly becoming “industrialised” and the dollar the bottom line criteria for success, it is reassuring to have the confirmation that there are those—in fact there is a strong cohort—who are dedicated to delving the depths of the meaning of their own and others’ practice.

The following is an edited version of Liza Lim's keynote lecture presented for the Inaugural Totally Huge New Music Festival Conference (Perth: 8 Oct. 2005). It examines cross-cultural aesthetics and ethical questions arising from non-Indigenous Australian composers interacting with Australian Indigenous cultures. The paper begins in a formal and framed way and then moves towards more personal and speculative comments.

These descriptions and further dialogues between Marco and the Khan constitute the substance of Italo Calvino's "Invisible Cities". Rubato is widely regarded as a purely intuitive art. While it may be true that most performers rely solely on intuition for their rubato, a conscious approach may also be helpful. For the teacher of “analysis for performers,” a conscious approach is essential if rubato is to be discussed at all.

Rubato is a difficult subject to theorize. The late David Epstein made an admirable attempt in his book Shaping Time, using recordings by performers he admired to construct quantitative models. My approach here will be qualitative rather than quantitative, and introspective rather than empirical. Unlike Epstein, I will …

Wabi Sabi is a fantasy for eight instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, violin, viola, cello and bass. The title, a Japanese phrase, refers to a love and nostalgia for ancient times, for old 
things - antiques - things which evoke feelings of purity, nobility, hard won wisdom, an essential spirituality, true worth. A tea ceremony in a Kyoto garden is “wabi sabi”. The piece was formed intuitively as a kind of drama, perhaps a Japanese folk tale. The expansion of “time perception”, the savoring of sound colors and the evocation of mood is central to the aesthetic of this music.

The Dignity And Humanity Of Bruce Springsteen's Criminals, Abbe Smith

In this essay, I discuss Springsteen's criminals by focusing on two albums, Nebraska and The Ghost of Tom Joad, and Springsteen's title song to the movie soundtrack Dead Man Walking. These are classic albums about criminals and prisoners, and "Dead Man Walkin’" may be one of the best songs ever written about being on death row. Before getting into the music, I first note the historical context - Springsteen's career has taken place during a particularly hostile time for lawbreakers - and offer a brief biographical sketch of Springsteen.
