Edward Kennedy Duke Ellingtons compositions are significant to the study of jazz and American music in general. This study examines his compositional style through a comparative analysis of three works from each of his main stylistic periods. The analyses focus on form, instrumentation, texture and harmony, melody, tonality, and rhythm. Each piece is examined on its own and their significant features are compared.

In the last forty years, many new solo and chamber pieces have been written for the trombone which involve elements of a theatrical nature, including lighting, make-up, costume, stage direction, dialogue/narration, sound effects, props, and audience interaction. It is difficult for a trombonist searching for music to discern a piece's theatrical nature by its listing in most catalogs. This document has attempted to solve that problem by gathering pieces that share these elements into an annotated collection. Nearly 200 pieces were discovered through contacts made with individual trombonists, composers, and publishers around the world. Of these, over sixty were acquired …

Musical imagery refers to the experience of "replaying" music by imagining it inside the head. Whereas visual imagery has been extensively studied, few people have investigated imagery in the auditory domain. This article reviews a program of research that has tried to characterize auditory imagery for music using both behavioral and cognitive neuroscientific tools. I begin by describing some of my behavioral studies of the mental analogues of musical tempo, pitch, and temporal extent. I then describe four studies using three techniques that examine the correspondence of brain involvement in actually perceiving vs. imagining familiar music. These involve one lesion …

This thesis consists of the composition, Symphony In One Movement, accompanied by an analytical study. The piece is composed for large orchestra and has a duration of twelve minutes. It comprises three connected but distinct sections, whose contrasts suggest individual movements. Each section is based on a traditional formal structure: sonata, passacaglia, and rondo-variations. The intention was to acknowledge the traditional symphony through these formal structures while applying more modem approaches to elements such as harmony, melody, and rhythm.

This document is an examination of Mahler's contributions to the discipline of conducting through the Retuschen he made of other composers' works. Chapter 1 is an overview of Mahler's ideas on what interpretive responsibilities a conductor faces when he/she conducts other composers' music. It explores how his changes to other composers' scores give us a valuable glimpse of Mahler's own sense of interpretation as well as documents the nineteenth-century approach to performance practice.

Pete Seeger, Ella Jenkins, Suni Paz and six other leading children's musicians in the U.S contributed their experience to this study about the crucial role of music and singing for social justice in children's lives and its shrinking presence in U.S. pre-school and elementary schools. The study built its theoretical framework on arts and music education, transformative education, and folk and socially conscious children's music. Participatory research, based on the revolutionary education theories of Paulo Freire, guided the dialogues with the participants. In 1753, Christian Gottfried Krause published a lied collection entitled Oden mit Melodien that laid the groundwork for a new setting of words for voice and piano. Nineteenth-century German lieder dominated influential song output and centralized the art form in Western Europe. Twentieth-century art song brings an expansion of influence beyond the German lieder tradition. Rebecca Grady, soprano, presented her graduate voice recital on Thursday, April 12, 2001, at 6:00 in the evening in Davis Hall of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center, on the University of Northern  Iowa campus, in partial fulfillment of the Master of Music degree. Her program included works by Handel, Dvorak, Liszt, and John la Montaine. The recital was presented in collaboration with pianist Korey Barrett.
