Technical Exercises: Use Them Or Lose Them?, Brenda Wristen

Piano pedagogues disagree about whether piano technique should be developed through practicing exercises or by isolating a musical passage which requires that a select technical motion be employed. Exercises are purely mechanical note patterns of varying length, usually only a few measures long. They are divorced from any musical content, and are devoted to only one technical skill. Like exercises, etudes usually concentrate upon developing one technical skill. However, etudes are fully developed pieces of some length which allow the player to build skill within a musical context. Four Variations On A Theme Of Nine, Nathan R. Barber

Masters Theses

This composition represents four variations of a projected total of nine. The variations are based on the number nine having a nine-note theme that utilizes a nine-note scale. Nine is also prominently featured in the meters, rhythms, and harmonic construction. The main harmonic consideration is pandiatonicism using the nine-note scale, although bitonal chords, positioned a ninth apart, are used quite prominently also.

The work is for full orchestra, augmented with saxophone, harp, piano, and four percussionists.

A Comparison Of Rhythmical Abilities And Behaviors Between Typical Children And Children With Williams Syndrome, Laura Grafton Pawuk

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to compare the rhythmical abilities and testing behaviors of children with Williams syndrome (Ws) to typical children. Forty-three children took part in the study, including 9 children with W s and 34 children of the typical population.

The MRL Test of Kinesthetic Response to Music and a Behavioral Checklist identified rhythmical ability and testing behaviors respectively. The former indicated that typical children scored significantly better than Ws children in 9 of 11 exercises at the .05 alpha level. Two Ws children were tested in optimum environments. At the end of World War II, doctors trained in the western bio-medical tradition integrated music into their practice as a means of helping soldiers recover, both mentally and physically, from the atrocities experienced while overseas. For many, music was a solace, opening up the peaceful memories of home and family and pushing aside the war-torn landscapes. By establishing interpersonal relationships between the therapist and the patient, as well as patient-to-patient in group settings, music enabled feelings and emotions to flow freely. The mind was given a structured pattern to bridge the gap of the psychological and physiological experience. It …

Fred Bartenstein has always seemed to find himself perfectly situated to pursue his life-long interest in bluegrass music – as he puts it, “I’ve always seemed to be in the right place at the right time.” This luck has allowed him to find bluegrass in the most surprising places, whether at a private day school in New Jersey, or at Harvard University in the late 1960s. It has also meant that, among other things, he found himself attending the first bluegrass festival in Fincastle, Va., becoming a bluegrass DJ at the age of 16, starting Muleskinner News magazine, and playing …

Once upon a time, in the beautiful land of Bohemia, there was a peaceful village on the bank of the Vltava river named Nelahozeves. It was about forty-five miles north of Prague, in what is now known as the Czech Republic. Nelahozeves was like most all of the Bohemian villages. It had a quaint church, a simple school, a whitewashed inn, a plain butcher shop, and the other shops of a normal village. Also, like many Bohemian villages of the time, Nelahozeves rested in the protective shadow of a noble castle.
