The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate briefly the evolution of musical styles and characteristics found in sacred soli from oratorios over the course of the Baroque Period to the Twentieth Century. The author chose eight representative arias for examination in this project, with two arias being chosen for each of four periods, the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Twentieth Century, selected because of the prominence of both the composer and the aria in the context of choral history. Between 1947 and 1979 the Utah Symphony Orchestra was transformed from an obscure, part-time, amateur orchestra into one of the major symphony orchestras in America. By 1947 the orchestra, which had begun as a Works Progress Administration organization, was barely hanging on. The symphony struggled to remain financially solvent, performing only a few concerts per year. Thirty-two years later the Utah Symphony Orchestra was one of the most prestigious musical ensembles in the country— receiving rave reviews from critics around the world, touring extensively, and with more than a hundred albums to its credit. Chapter 1 is an overview of Mahler's ideas on what interpretive responsibilities a conductor faces when he/she conducts other composers' music. It explores how his changes to other composers' scores give us a valuable glimpse of Mahler's own sense of interpretation as well as documents the nineteenth-century approach to performance practice.

The Kodaly approach is based on theories of child development and learning. Paolo Virchi's II primo libro di tabolatura di citthara di ricercati, madrigali, canzoni, napolitane et saltarelli (Venice: Girolamo Scotto, 157414) is typical of many tablatures written for lute and cittern during the sixteenth century. It consists of fantasias, intabulations of madrigals, solo songs for tenor and cittern, and dance music. This thesis presents a complete transcription and analysis of the collection, the only surviving copy of which is preserved in the Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek, Vienna. The edition was made from a microfilm copy obtained from this library.

This project is a study of selected organ pieces (from the 24 published) of French composer Jehan Alain (1911-1940). Although a catalogue of works of Alain lists 93 titles, the works for organ represent the composer's major field of concentration during the last six years of his life. Alain, who died during World War II at the age of 29, made a significant contribution to the twentieth-century organ repertory despite his short lifetime.

Paul Hindemith was one of the most distinguished composers of the twentieth century. This thesis will begin with biographical information, highlighting important events in his life. Then, in an effort to understand his compositional style and his philosophy of Gebrauchsmusik, his mastery of classical form, the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano is chosen for a detailed stylistic analysis. Treated in the analysis chapter are form, melody, harmony, rhythm, dynamic, and the technically problematic areas involved such as fingering and ensemble with piano. This study consisted of two parts: (a) an historical description of the music classes, divided into three time periods for comparison and explanation, and (b) an evaluation of the effort determined from questionnaire sampling of teachers, students and stake music leaders. Historically, music courses for beginning and advanced organists and conductors were organized and maintained by the General Music Committee of the Church, designed to improve musical attitudes and performance in religious services. Many thousands completed the short, comprehensive classes, which offered an opportunity to study and prepare for church music service.

This thesis statement presents an analysis and explanation of a music composition entitled: Magnificat. The full music score to the Magnificat may be found in the collection of the Music Department of the School of the Arts, Virginia Commonwealth University. The King James Version is the source for all of Biblical text. The presentation here of the text for the Magnificat corresponds to the manner it is introduced into the music score. Thus, the use of small case primarily to contrast those parts of the text of high volume intensity which are capitalized, and parallel text to show simultaneous reading.

In general, high school choruses do not reach their potential as far as choral tone is concerned. The tone is generally characterized by either a completely undisciplined and labored sound or a pseudo "mature" sound imposed upon the students by a director seeking to emulate his college choir.

This thesis contains an analysis of the concept of Zion as reflected in the songs sung by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The following definitional areas within Zion concept are considered:
1. Zion: A personal spiritual condition.
2. Zion: A perfect society.
3. Zion: Various geographical locations.
4. Events included in the concept of Zion.

Each of the above areas is analyzed first, from a historical and doctrinal viewpoint and finally, as to how it is reflected in the songs of the Mormons.

The purpose of this study was to collect and record folk songs known to some of the older inhabitants of Wales, Utah. An analysis was made of thirty of the forty-six songs for the purpose of attaining a knowledge of their characteristics such as form, rhythm, melody, tempo, tonality, melodic interval range, phrase and period length, theme repetition, texture, and ornamentation. Observations were also made with reference to the textual influence on the overall musical effect.

This study represents an effort to analyze the forms used by Flor Peeters in his Thirty Chorale Preludes on Well-Known Hymn Tunes, op. 68, 69, and 70. Through this analysis it has been found that Flor Peeters has systematically used certain devices in the treatment of the cantus firmus. Furthermore, these devices can be used as a criterion in developing a classification system for the chorale preludes, which logically divide into six groups or types.

The purpose of this thesis is to present a history of the Ogden Tabernacle Choir, to ascertain the extent to which it developed musically, and to include any contributions that were made by the various conductors in attaining that degree of artistry achieved by this musical organization. Inasmuch as the choir was disbanded in 1949, this study will encompass its complete history. It will also include a biography of its conductors. Because the choir rehearsed and performed primarily in the Pioneer Tabernacle, a short history of this building and the Ogden Tabernacle Organ will be included, as well.

Early Mormon leaders realized the value of music as an important element in spiritual and recreational activities. Consequently, they encouraged and sponsored musical groups.

Three pioneer bands of Salt Lake City—the Nauvoo Brass Band, Nauvoo Legion Martial Band, and Quadrille Band—had originated during the early 1840's in Nauvoo, Illinois, under the sponsorship of Joseph Smith. They performed at all important civic and social occasions.
