The lack of knowledge and understanding of the performance practice of the early eighteenth century can lead to faulty and ill-conceived ideas regarding the interpretation of Bach's flute

sonatas. Problems of tempo, articulation, phrasing, dynamics, and ornamentation can overwhelm the student approaching these works for the first time. Luckily, the great flutists of our time have

given us a permanent documentation of their interpretations of this music by committing to record their performances. A diligent study of these performances, (in this case, the Sonata in B Minor), can guide the student to make intelligent decisions for his own playing of …

This paper represents a study of the predictability of several types of music tests given to the fourth grade students in East Grand Rapids, Michigan. The tests studied were the "Selmer Music Guidance Survey," a Teacher's Evaluation, and an investigatordeveloped self-concept test. The study showed that the correlation coefficient between the self-concept test and the achievement level of the students at the time of the study was the highest. The correlation coefficient between the "Selmer Music Guidance Survey" and the achievement level was the lowest. The lute song or "ayre" as it was usually spelled by its Elizabethan and early Jacobean composers was a type of English song whose melody was predominant and its accompaniment carefully composed. It was usually accompanied by the lute and often the viol doubled the bass line. The term "ayre" or "aire" was used by English writers of the seventeenth century in the sense of key or mode. The texture of the lute song was generally homophonic and much simpler than that of the polyphonic madrigal. Of course, lutenist-song composers like John Dowland and John Danyel often used all of …
