I have known for a long time that in order to complete my honors thesis, I would need to write some sort of “big, monolithic” piece to show my work. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions music teachers in the Midwest have regarding working with multilingual students, how music education benefits their multilingual students, and how they perceive the struggles their multilingual students have regarding music education. The study was a qualitative study in which 5 teachers were interviewed on their perceptions. The study found that music teachers see many benefits of music education for multilingual students including: building a sense of belonging, helping with language learning, having a non-academic outlet, and providing additional socialization opportunities. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the role of mobile carillons in honoring the traditions of carillonneurs and universities alike. I will first discuss the history of carillons and the tradition of carillonneurs, as well as the possible impacts of exposing the technical skill required to play such a public instrument that yet uniquely isolates the performer. I will then explain the various roles that mobile carillons have served and their gradual development over the years. In a school band setting, most music educators will begin a rehearsal with a warm-up routine. When a unified group warm-up is desired, rather than allowing open time for students to warm up individually, a resource is needed. Many supplemental method books and materials have been published to provide exercises to organize this desired ensemble warm-up. After physically preparing students to play through a warm-up, many effective band directors choose to devote additional rehearsal time to the development of fundamental musical skills. Emma Andersen is a dedicated performer and teacher who has performed across the Midwest as a soloist with the Austin Symphony Orchestra and Willmar Area Symphonic Orchestra and as sectional violinist with orchestras across Minnesota, Iowa, and Indiana. Women high school band directors in the state of Iowa may experience teaching in secondary band programs differently than men high school band directors. Previous research has shown that women have faced many challenges in music education, particularly in teaching high school band. Four women band directors from different school class sizes and currently teaching in Iowa were interviewed about their teaching experiences to collect data using a qualitative case study design. My findings support the literature reviewed in suggesting that women band directors in secondary band programs in Iowa may be treated differently than men band directors by experiencing …

The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of three different listening conditions on how students rate their preference of musical genre. The preferences of the students could then be analyzed and incorporated into daily teaching. The participants were fifth-grade students of the researcher. Students (N = 44) were divided into three groups: Listening Only, Small Group Discussion and Teacher Info. Students in the Listening Only group listened to a playlist of music representing ten genres and rated each genre on a scale from 1(I don’t like it) to 5 (I like it a lot). Students in the …
