Piano Study And Gender Associations: A Query Into The Perceptions Of Children Ages Five To Fourteen, Richard C. Winfree

Music Theses & Dissertations

From its inception, male composers and performers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Cliburn, and Kempffhad dominated piano performance. Recent research suggests, however, that the piano has been designated with a feminine gender stereotype. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of public school children ages five to fourteen years old relative to gender association and piano study to determine if a gender stereotype existed and at what age, if any, the stereotype stabilized.

To achieve this purpose, two surveys were created and implemented by the researcher. The first survey was administered to 879 students in …

Through an examination of Parliament-Funkadelic’s lyrics and music, this paper explores shit, dirt, and the funk, investigating their relationship to George Clinton and his band’s desire to darken the Humanistic project of Enlightenment, their desire to soil language, and thereby question conventional, bourgeois values. The author argues that Funkadelic participate in what Mikhail Bakhtin calls the “peculiar logic” of the carnivalesque, detourning status quo notions of culture and society, creating complex contortions through the blurring of the good and the bad, the cerebral and the carnal, the sublime and the mundane. In 1941, the famously despondent Theodor Adorno worried about the detrimental effects of radio broadcast upon the symphony. He theorized that much of value was lost when listeners experienced an orchestral performance of a composition in symphonic form through its electronic transmission to their kitchens rather than in a concert hall. After numerous visits to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio, I have found that the best place to start a tour is with the two films on the ground floor. Both films serve to set up narratives that run throughout the rest of the exhibits. The first film, Mystery Train, tells a traditional history of rock music's development beginning with the merging of blues, gospel and country music in large, urban centers like Chicago and encourages visitors to think of rock in terms of its continuing development through self-referencing. This nonfiction narrative traces the fiddle from its European origins to its American incarnation as a folk instrument, blending history with the personal stories of fiddle makers and players. The centerpiece around which a varied cast of luthiers and musicians shifts, the instrument itself is the main character of the narrative.

As the work unfolds, various facets of the fiddle's identity are explored, revealing a riddle of instrument—a creation whose beauty confounds, and whose anatomy contradicts physics and geometry, science and sense. More than anything else, perhaps, this narrative, in the end, is an attempt at penetrating the mystery of …

Die Geburt der Tragodie is a full-length opera about the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche during the period of his insanity. The work is in three acts and spans a total of two and half hours. It is scored for string quartet, two keyboardists, two trumpets, two percussionists, and four singers. One of the main actors also plays solo piano, another sings a solo soprano part. All the rest of the parts are spoken. Volume one contains the text, performance notes, and a brief introduction. Volume two contains the music.

"Matoaka" is the first draft and partial scoring of an original music/play about the Powhatan Indians of Tidewater, Virginia. This music/play is actually the second in a projected series of three about the Powhatan Indians and the Native American world view. "Matoaka" is staged from a Powhatan perspective on the events surrounding the English settlement of Jamestowne in the year 1607. As much of the Powhatan culture has been destroyed, the Powhatan world view is reconstructed and interpreted from current and historical readings about Native Americans. English music history in the nineteenth century illuminates the larger society of which it was part. Music had lost nearly all of its importance to the English people in the early nineteenth century. This was drastically changed when the sight-singing movement took hold in the early 184Os. It spread rapidly and became a social influence as well as a musical one. People gathered together to learn to read music and then formed choirs in order to perform. Singing societies were organized to serve a variety of purposes, from providing religious outlets to convivial evenings. The societies often bridged wide gaps …

(First paragraph) The music of Johann Jakob Froberger is recognized by scholars and musicians to be of significant artistic achievement and historical interest. Yet, with the possible exception of the suites, few modern-day performances of his music are likely to be heard for several reasons: the music does not fulfill the requirement of easy and accessible listening; the music lacks a certain superficial brilliance, or the proper instruments are unavailable so that the music cannot be heard in its most authentic language.
