Jazz improvisation courses have become part of the canon within upper-division course offerings, yet only a few students end up sounding original or creative. This descriptive phenomenological study aimed to elucidate, understand, and articulate the significance underlying the lived experiences of adept jazz musicians as they contemplated developing and disseminating improvisational skills. Upper-division jazz improvisation pedagogy is rooted in music theory, a chord-scale approach to jazz harmony, solo transcriptions, and commonly used patterns. Modern beginning instrumental method books, aimed at beginners, are based on the Orff Schulwerk Methodology. In this methodology, students learn to play their instrument by using well-known music selected from classical music, folk tunes, and the popular music of the day. The problem at Honolulu Christian Church Japanese Department is that ontologies skewed by traditionalism and Japanese culture prevented full participation in congregational worship, resulting in unawareness and deprived spiritual growth. The purpose of this project was to revitalize HCCJD’s corporate worship through research and pedagogy that empowered congregants with a purpose for their praise. It was hypothesized that if HCCJD discovered the purpose for their praise, then they would be more inclined to participate in corporate worship, increasing the likelihood of spiritual growth. This qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological research study examines the sight-reading abilities and perceptions of eight to ten high school, dyslexic, upper woodwind students from locations in the United States. The study involves students sight-reading an etude that participants had not seen previously. Though studies featuring note reading and dyslexic students are well documented, the literature has not fully addressed this phenomenon among high-school-aged students and upper woodwind students, who regularly encounter the most technically challenging rhythmic figures.
