There are so many splendid tenor arias- "La donna e mobile," "Celeste Aida," "Vesti la giubba." Can an opera lover really have one favorite aria, much less a favorite aria by a particular singer? Maybe, maybe not, but certainly most JB devotees· have one or more arias which they view as singular or striking or equal to (if not superior) to others' performances.

(The following report is an excellent supplement to the account of Jussi's vocal problems of December 1953 on page 246 of Jussi. The previous chapter, "Faust in Tails," dealt with Jussi's successful 1953 Metropolitan opening night in Faust - and his thoughts about the infamous new production directed by Peter Brook. After three successful performances with an all-star cast, Jussi had to drop out of the fourth performance on December 17th after the first act. JBS member Karl Hekler was there, and he offers this stirring account.)

After the success of our June conference in Washington, our New York City members are eager to see something similar organized in the Big Apple. As a modest first event, our Board of Directors has offered to sponsor a one-day conference on August 20, 2000, with a simple agenda: perhaps two main talks by well known speakers and a roundtable panel led by singers who worked closely with Jussi. Considerable time would be left free for discussion by enthusiasts, and we'd hope to find some publicity and new supporters for our Society.

Jussi Bjoerling, when at the top of his form, could pour out tones that compared favorably with any of the strong-voiced tenors I have ever heard whether Giocomo Lauri-Volpi, Giovanni Martinelli, Mario Del Monaco or even, I sometimes thought, Caruso. six of the great singers of this century had a common factor aside from their voices. Caruso, Galli-Curci, Gluck, McCormack, Tauber and Bjoerling were loved by scores of people who were never inside an opera house. Gigli too had this quality but on a more nationalistic basis. The popularity of the first four is understandable in relation to their era. Entertainment was largely homemade, or supplied by phonographs, and a yearly concert by the personification of a recorded voice was a memorable event. One December day in 1959 in New York I was interviewed for the radio by an American reporter. He asked me, among other things: ''Miss Soederstroem, what do you consider to be the goal of your career?" I had made my debut at the Metropolitan Opera a few months earlier, and my reply came completely spontaneously: 'Well, I reached that goal the day before yesterday. I sang Marguerite in Faust at the Metropolitan with Jussi Bjorling in the title role, and that is something which I couldn't, even in my wildest dreams, have dared to hope I would achieve."

Another CD collection of Jussi's HMV 78s has appeared, this time on Naxos 8.110701- Jussi Bjorling: Opera Arias. These twenty-three selections, dating from 1936 through 1948, amount to a hit parade of favorite tenor arias from Jussi's HMV 78s made during those years, all the best known standard takes, and all recorded in Stockholm with Nils Grevillius conducting "his" orchestra. Thus they are certainly contained on the EMI four-disc Jussi Bjorling Edition: Studio Recordings 1930-1959 (7243 5 66306 2 8 Mono), reviewed in our 3Q99 issue. Owen Lee's eloquent tribute to Jussi on an intermission feature during the February 5th Metropolitan broadcast of La Traviata. Luckily, we had a tape going during that broadcast, anticipating some sort of "happening" on Jussi's birthday. Thus we can provide for you the precise transcript of Fr. Lee's statement. For a Jussiphile to admit that he doesn't like his favorite singer's rendition of an aria or song might be considered tantamount to heresy. But I have to admit to being disappointed by Jussi's performance of that most beautiful of arias "Una furtiva lagrima" from Donizetti's L'Elisir D'amore. Now, I can just hear your heated exclamations of "Mio Dio," "Mon Dieu," "Gott mitt der welt," and even "Dem dere's fightin' words, Cantor!" Well, so be it, and I'll just explain why.

"Amor ti vieta" was a popular encore with Jussi's fans. In fact, on the Atlanta Recital CD (Bluebell 020), he says that he will sing the aria in response to a specific request. I think that his approach to this aria is special, and one version, in particular, is peerless.
