We are glad to welcome the latest two CDs in Naxos's "Jussi Bjorling Collection," Vols. 4 and 5, and here give Kristian Krogholm's review of Vol. 5 since it contains the wonderful song recital that RCA published in 1952 as "Jussi Bjorling in Song," but never re-released on CD. After the above century-long perspective on Bjorling, by Jurgen Kesting, we quote a few excerpts from John Steane's lecture on the same day. That perspective reached back to Gigli, Pertile, and implicitly Caruso, and was titled ' "Jussi Bjorling in London." Here Mr Steane compares Jussi's classic 1939 recordings for HMV of arias from Il Trovatore with the recording of an actual Covent Garden performance that year of that opera:

The new year got off to a fast start for our three JBS chapters, all represented in Stockholm at the January Board meeting of the Scandinavian JB Sallskapet: Dan Shea represented the USA Society and stayed in close communication with Richard Copeman and Eric Wimbles of the JBAS, during his ten days in Sweden. The main question was how to proceed with plans for an international meeting-Kongress in September 2004, and all hands set to work at once under the leadership of Harald Henrysson. Just about the toughest opera ticket to get, anywhere, is for the Glyndebourne Festival in England. And the hit of the upcoming season looks to be an all-star Tristan und Isolde . Thanks to generous help from this production's dashing Tristan, Robert Gambill, Dan has been able to obtain six tickets for June 25 and will be attending, as will Stefan Olmars of the JB Sallskapet. Our previous Newsletter #5 told of Robert Merrill and Birgit Nilsson joining JBSUSA as Honorary Advisors. Now with similar pride we can add the names of ·Placido Domingo and Neil Shicoff to our list of Honorary Advisors - these two unique tenors share much with Jussi Bjorling , in addition to being great tenors in their own right: Let's just note here that their fathers were all professional singers; that they each were singing semi-professionally by the age of 8; and they'd all debuted in a major tenor role by the age of 19.

We are pleased to announce that videotapes of the October 2002 Conference are being prepared for JBS members interested in obtaining copies. Michael Mayer, who taped the conference proceedings, has agreed to edit the eight sessions of Oct. 24/25, plus the afternoon session of Oct. 26 (Jellinek panel), into three Extended Play videotapes. We came to Manhattan from Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Israel, Italy, Sweden, the U.K.- and the U.S., from Massachusetts to California, from Minnesota to Texas. Yes, New Jersey too. The Conference continues to help generate exciting consequences: our favorite is the news, announced during the Conference by Daniel Guss of RCA/BMG, that RCA' s "reDiscover" series of classical CD-releases would feature a new CD of Jussi's complete September 1955 Carnegie Hall recital. This new CD will include eight items never before heard, including an especially brilliant version of "Come un bel di di maggio" from Andrea Chenier, three Sibelius songs and three others by Grieg and Sjoberg. Mr. Guss played the Chenier aria and Sibelius's "Svarta rosor'' for our conference audience, who agreed that the sound was …
