The lute song or "ayre" as it was usually spelled by its Elizabethan and early Jacobean composers was a type of English song whose melody was predominant and its accompaniment carefully composed. It was usually accompanied by the lute and often the viol doubled the bass line. The term "ayre" or "aire" was used by English writers of the seventeenth century in the sense of key or mode. The texture of the lute song was generally homophonic and much simpler than that of the polyphonic madrigal. Of course, lutenist-song composers like John Dowland and John Danyel often used all of …

There have been many works written about the Lieder of Brahms, Schubert, et cetera. However, no one has chosen to write about the Lieder of Richard Strauss. The writer has set out to gain a more thorough knowledge of the Strauss techniques. To find possible relationships between his vocal and instrumental lines, his opera and song and to see how the German language affects or does not affect the vocal line of the Lieder.

The traditional ballad, the genre of the above poetry, has been a subject of much controversy and speculation, especially regarding its origin. The problem of origin is not likely to be solved unless much more evidence is found. Among the many theories are communal authorship, and individual poet; humble and oral origin, and sophisticated and literary origin. Studies of linguistics, of ballad refrain, and of carole continue the attempt to discover ballad genesis. However, a very different approach perhaps can be used to determine the origin of some ballads, particularly the romantic ballads; that approach is to use the courtly …

The principle of the simultaneous cross-relation in vocal music has generally and commonly been associated with the English composers of the sixteenth century. This assumption has been more specifically connected with secular music, namely the English madrigal. To find the validity of this assumption in relation to both secular and sacred music I have compared the available vocal music of three English composers, two major and one minor: Thomas Tallis (1505-1585), William Byrd (1543-1623), and Thomas Whythorne (1528-1596).
