Who Makes Electronic Music?: Vocalists, Composers, Gender And Electronic Music Technology, Hannah Bosma

An analysis on how electronic sound technology has altered the roles of the composer and the vocalist. By foregrounding timbre and making permanent the sound of the vocal performance, recorded sound and electronic music have the potential to impact the balance of power between the traditionally male composer and the female vocalist. The article refers to various singers and composers such as La Barbara, Diamanda Galas, and Laurie Anderson to demonstrate the potential impact of sound recordings to alter these gender dynamics. In 1983, Howard Gardner shook the foundations of intelligence testing and the field of education by suggesting that there are seven distinct intelligences. These intelligences had testable and distinct attributes that were supported by his research at the Boston Veterans Administration. This research cited the existence of savants and prodigies, isolation by brain damage, and psychometric findings as support for Multiple Intelligence Theory. Widely accepted by the education community at large, the application of MI principles has been further elaborated in the writings of Thomas Armstrong and David Lazear. This study addresses the development of a trumpet capable of playing a complete chromatic scale. The invention of the keyed trumpet at the end of the eighteenth century freed the instrument from the acoustic limitations of the Baroque "natural" trumpet. These limitations are explained in the study. The capabilities of the keyed trumpet prompted first Franz Joseph Haydn and later Johann Nepomuk Hummel to compose concerti in which the solo trumpet parts contain novel chromatic melodic passages impossible to perform on natural trumpets. My doctoral studies at the University of Northern Colorado focused upon the development of an effective music curriculum and techniques of music instruction. After my appointment to the faculty at Parkland College in. 1970, it became apparent that my theoretical concepts of curriculum and instruction could be applied in. a practical manner. Music Therapy And Rett Syndrome: A Survey Of Music Therapy Practitioners, Stacy S. Gay

Music therapy practitioners residing in the United States and known to have experience with Rett Syndrome were surveyed to better understand how music therapy aids in the treatment of clients with Rett syndrome. The survey was designed to learn if there were general trends in goals/objectives addressed, session structure used, vocal response to music intervention, strategies toward encouraging independent hand usage, and preferred instruments and adaptive equipment.

Of the 73 sent out to NAMT and AAMT members, 36 questionnaires were returned. Question items that received a 50% or higher response rate by the participants included session structure involving a set …

The Tristan Chord In Historical Context: A Response To John Rothgeb, William Rothstein

John Rothgeb’s analysis of the “Tristan chord” engages a large intertextual network, stretching back to the Baroque and centering on recitative. Examples of a specific figure of recitative, usually associated with the asking of a question, are presented and analyzed. Examples include passages in Wagner's operas before Tristan.

The purpose of this study was to see if differences exist in Taiwanese students when speaking in their native Chinese language as compared to a secondary language (English) using voice analysis. Not only was the study intended to compare pitches and octaves of 2 languages, but it also hoped to identify the possible factors that influenced the voices of 2 languages.

Fifty Chinese students were randomly selected from a population of 84 Chinese students who were from Taiwan, had established residence in the USA for at least 6 months, and were enrolled in WMU with TOEFL score of at least …

Understood as a search for "the abstract principles embodied in music and the sounds of which it consists," music theory casts a wide net: it calls for a comparative sample and insists on a systematic methodology. As " the scholarly study of music, wherever it is found historically or geographically," musicology casts an even wider net. In practice, however, it has not been possible to transcend historical and geographical boundaries. Two "Mistakes" In Stravinsky's Lntroitus, Joseph N. Straus

Publications and Research

During the 1950s and 60s, Stravinsky learned, mastered, and significantly transformed a musical language that was, for him, entirely new—the language of twelve-tone serialism. As the abundant compositional sketches from this period in the Paul Sacher Foundation make clear, this process was not always an easy one for Stravinsky. Indeed, the sketches show him groping for solutions to basic compositional problems, including particularly the problem of creating meaningful vertical harmonies from the essentially linear nature of the twelve-tone system.

A Primer For Atonal Set Theory, Joseph N. Straus

Atonal set theory has a bad reputation. Like Schenkerian analysis in its earlier days, set theory has had an air of the secret society about it, with admission granted only to those who possess the magic password, a forbidding technical vocabulary bristling with expressions like "6- Z44" and "interval vector." It has thus often appeared to the uninitiated as the sterile application of arcane, mathematical concepts to inaudible and uninteresting musical relationships. This situation has created understandable frustration among musicians, and the frustration has grown as discussions of twentieth-century music in the professional theoretical literature have come to be expressed …
