Singing Schools In Southcentral Kentucky, Donald Beisswenger

Singing school teachers, who teach rural church congregations to sing from shape-note gospel songbooks, are still working in southcentral Kentucky, but the demand for them is smaller than it was in the first half of the twentieth century. The interdependence network in which singing school teachers, songbook publishers, and community singing events were key parts began to weaken in the 1940s as a result of the growth in popularity of professional gospel quartet concerts and gospel record albums. The recent fascination for the flutist-composers of the 19th century has brought to life much music by flute virtuosos such as Tulou, Demersseman, Boehm, Genin, and others. To this time, however, the colorful artistry of Charles Nicholson has been overlooked. His brief career, spanning but two decades, brought the flute to the forefront as a solo instrument in England and propagated numerous fantasies, variation, methods, and other works for flute. The purpose of the project was to determine if two Junior High band student trainees could accurately evaluate the performance of individual band students from a pre-selected method book. Band students would record specific musical exercises which were evaluated by two student trainees and the band director. The purpose of the project was to check the reliability between the student trainees and the director.

In research of the subject, the author found the Central Washington State College Library to be lacking in information on the Doublebass. Research on the subject was done through various libraries in the Seattle area, and by interview of Seattle instrument makers.

This thesis is divided into chapters dealing with the historical perspectives and the construction forms of the Doublebass. This paper is not designed to recommend but merely review the subject.

Synopsis

PROLOG

Perceiving society as decadent, an artist ruminates over his existence. A narrator describes the chorus as they reluctantly assemble on a black box stage.

SCENE 1

Painful thoughts force the artist to remember his past as essentially a trilogy of forces: (1) Caritas – mystical religious feelings embodied in the Latin liturgy; (2) the narrow space between the five lines – an allusion to the musical staff and his career as a composer; (3) post puterbific thoughts – physical, carnal instincts. The work, which perhaps could best be described as a “metaphysical comedy”, consists of three levels:

1) the biography of the unnamed dilettante artist-philosopher “__”
2) personal interpolations by the biographer, Russel Stanford
3) editor’s commentary by Randall Snyder

Stanford, in spite of a lack of enthusiasm for the subject, agrees to write the biography. During this period his health degenerates and he increasingly imposes his own irrelevant opinions into the biography (his remarks are all indented, using the Palatino font, and further identified by the use of the small case “i”. Utilizing the music of the contemporary American composer, Paul Creston, the purpose of this study was to compare the idiomatic differences and technical capabilities of the piano and the guitar. This study of the transcription process, and the problems that arise in adapting piano literature to the guitar, has had binary results: a challenging collection of rhythmic studies, for the guitarist, as well as possible additions to his concert repertoire.

It was recommended that the initial guitar fingering of each piece be indicated; and phrase markings should be added where possible.
