Musicians are familiar with the traditional categorizations of key relationships: closely related, parallel, relative, and foreign. While some of these terms do describe well the relatedness of keys, they do not provide a clear means of comparing the relative remoteness of all keys from a particular reference key. For example, how much “more distant” is E-flat major from C major than is G major or D minor? The model presented in this lecture includes a number of important factors that may affect the perception of key relationships and assigns numerical measures to those factors. A Conductor’S Guide To Wind Instrument Deficiencies: A Practical Addendum To The Undergraduate Conducting Text, Donald Bradley Snow

commonly used undergraduate conducting texts that teach the correction of wind intonation deficiencies. Research has indicated that conductors must be aware of and be trained to recognize and correct intonation deficiencies of wind instruments. Music teachers must understand acoustical differences among just, Pythagorean, and tempered tuning systems. Nonetheless, existing pedagogical materials for undergraduate conductors in training are of little or no help. The supplemental text addresses intonation deficiencies and provides musical examples and exercises to help the young conductor gain an understanding of the factors that adversely affect the intonation of wind instruments. Sight-Reading Versus Repertoire Performance On The Piano: A Case Study Using High-Speed Motion Analysis, Brenda Wristen, Sharon Evans, Nikolaos Stergiou

This study was intended to examine whether differences exist in the motions employed by pianists when they are sightreading versus performing repertoire and to determine whether these differences can be c[uantified using high-speed motion capture technology. A secondary question of interest was whether or not an improvement in the efficiency of motion could be observed between two sight-reading trials of the same musical excerpt. This case study employed one subject and a six-camera digital infrared camera system to capture the motion of the pianist playing two trials of a repertoire piece and two trials of a sight-reading excerpt. Monsieur De Saint-Georges' 'Règles Pour L'Accompagnement': A Translation And Commentary, Sara-Anne Churchill

Performance Practice Review

Saint-Georges' 'Règles pour l'accompagnement,' which provide instruction in figured bass realization at the harpsichord, are found in an undated manuscript (Paris, Bn, Vm8 1139). This article examines questions of authorship, date of copying, and the author's identity. The manuscript exhibits a close connection to Jean-François Dandrieu’s Principes de l’accompagnement du clavecin (1719) and probably represents an early version of that work.

It Can “Spoil All The Beauty”: The Duplicating Of Solo Dissonances In Seventeenth-Century Thorough-Bass Accompaniment, Roland Jackson

Performance Practice Review

17th-century accompaniments avoid duplicating the dissonances present in solo parts. This is borne out in available written-out versions (composer's copies, orchestral scorings), e.g. by R. Dowland, Cesti, A. Scarlatti, and Purcell. The same is evident in unrealized accompaniments (bass lines with or without figures) if interpreted according to contemporary strictures (e.g. Rule of Octave). Following these guidelines, harmonizations are suggested for laments by Monteverdi, Cavalli, and Cesti.
