This thesis studies the evolution, ideology and use of the myth of La Llorona through time in the Hispanic World. Considering this myth as one of the most known traditional narratives of the American continent, I begin by providing visual, ethnohistorical and ethnographical insights of weeping in Mesoamerica and South America and the specific mention of a weeping woman in some Spanish chronicles to say how western values were stablished in “the new continent” through this legend. Includes notices for a 1944 biography, a bibliographic review, and a tribute to Josiah K. Lilly, a collector of Foster manuscripts.

Materials related to “Hopkins House” in Marion, Louisiana. The Hopkins House is on the national historical register. Included with the material is information on “In the Gloaming,” the song supposedly written by Anna Porter Harrison who lived in the house while her mother served as a governess before the Civil War. Other material includes autobiographical accounts of the family that owned the house. Most of the materials are copies from other sources, but an operetta performed at Marion High School in 1939 is enclosed in its original binding and hand-drawn cover.

Americans have been singing protest songs since the inception of the nation and the idea of protesting through music is as old as music itself. The earliest and most well-known American songs and hymns of protest were patriotic songs like “The Star-Spangled Banner” and the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” that were written during the War of 1812 and the Civil War respectively. The effectiveness of protest songs of the era was limited though, as the only people who heard the song were the people in attendance at the performance.
