The hymnal of the Latter-day Saints first proposed only shortly after the organization of the Church and published continually every few years between 1835 and 1871, is a remarkably accurate indicator of the changing fortunes and beliefs of the early Saints. The first hymnal, gathered by Emma Smith, uncompromisingly sets forth the basic Mormon belief in man's free agency, his innate perfectability, and his kinship to his Heavenly Father. Later editions reflect the missionary concerns of the church (1840), the tremendous persecution the saints are subjected to (1841), the Church difficulties after the martyrdom of Joseph Smith (1849), the call …

Ethnomusicologist Bau Graves has written about Maurice Gagnon (1927-1973): “Maurice Gagnon is remembered as a dynamic performer by those who him play. At the age of ten, he was already an ace harmonica player and could attract an audience and earn money playing in clubs. He played a repertoire of jigs and reels and also composed a number of tunes some of which he recorded as 45’s and one LP album. These recordings, released between 1964 and 1970, are a historical scarcity: only a relative handful of disks of traditional Maine Franco-American music have ever been available to the public.”

Chuck Frechette, Bill Beauchesne, and Marcel Larrivee [L to R] have performed together since 1965. They began playing for Le Club Musicale Literaire, and after adding more members, became The Mountain Dews. Their repertoire includes western and bluegrass music. Bill first heard a bass washtub on the Ted Mack Amateur Radio Hour. He figured out how to make one and how to play it. Bill was 12 when he got together with a group of neighborhood friends playing guitar, harmonica, and washboard. Their gigs included bean suppers in church basements. A Survey Of American Songs Of Peace From The Colonial Era To The Present, Walter Clippinger Simmons

This thesis will attempt to trace the evolution and historical development of American anti-war and peace songs. Researching the study has been an adventure into an unknown aspect of American history. No published account of a similar or related study was discovered. The Library of Congress has no catalogue classification for pacifist songs. The Swarthmore College Peace Collection contains perhaps the only specific collection of peace songs in the country. Nevertheless, this study can draw upon a collection of over two hundred songs gathered from public and university libraries and interested individuals across the country.
