You Better Work!: Underground Dance Music in New York City is arguably the first ethnography of electronic dance music culture; it is also one of the first ethnomusicologically-influenced monographs on mediated dance music. Kai Fikentscher deftly avoids the wealth of music industry genre tags (such as "deep house" or "two step garage") that plague many writings on electronic dance music, instead focusing on a specific dance community in New York City which began its social dance practice in the days of disco and continued the practice well into the 1990s. The Berlin Phonogram-Archive was founded in 1900 by Carl Stumpf and Otto Abraham with a collection of twenty wax cylinders of a Siamese theatre ensemble. Erich Moritz von Hornbostel became the head of the archive in 1905, and ever since, the archive—and its archivists—have held an important place in the histories f folklore, ethnomusicology, and recorded sound. Recognized in 1999 by UNESCO’s “Memory of the World” project, the archive now holds over 150,000 music recordings and recently released a comprehensive catalogue (Ziegler 2006) and the CD-ROM The World Map of Music: The Edison Phonograph and the Musical Cartography of the …

Eisler Shadow-Puppet Collection Catalogue, Joko Susilo

This illustrated, scholarly catalogue of the more than 200 traditional Central Javanese puppets comprising the David Eisler Collection of Shadow-Puppets was written by Dr. Joko Susilo, a Fulbright scholar at Bates College in 2004.  Dr. Susilo is an eighth-generational Indonesian puppeteer and scholar who teaches in the Departmetn of Music at the University of Otago in New Zealand.  The Eisler collection is on long-term, permanent loan to the Bates College Gamelan Orchestra.

In conducting preliminary research for my undergraduate honors thesis, I discovered a two-volume publication in Mullins Library at the University of Arkansas, The Historical Memoirs of the Irish Bards (1818) by Joseph Cooper Walker, Esq. (c. 1761-1810). It held a variety of information on the music and poetry of ancient Ireland. What interested me most was the collection of melodies at the end of the first volume. Looking at overviews of Irish music collection, I saw little mention of Walker and his Irish Bards. Upon further investigation, I found that the first edition of his book (1786) contained only fifteen …

As cosmopolitan South Asians are well aware, several Indian performing arts, from Bharatanatyam to Bhangra, have come to flourish outside of India, especially as cultivated by non-resident Indians and Pakistanis. Most of these art forms, like Bharatanatyam, either adhere closely to models thriving in India itself, or else - like the British-based Bhangra - although differing from counterparts in India, are nevertheless familiar to interested urbanites in South Asia, who can buy recordings and cultivate an interest in them if they desire. This thesis discusses the percussion instruments of the Malay communities of Kelantan and the Chams, which is based on patterns of rhythm. This thesis concentrates on analyzing the comparative patterns of rhythm. Two headed drums are referred to for a comparison of patterns of rhythm. The two headed drums in Cham communities are called ginang. These comparative studies will examine the cultural ties between the two communities namely the Malay of Kelantan and the Chams. The relationship between musical instruments and spirits is also explored in this thesis. For both communities, musical instruments and spirits are closely related. Percussion instruments …

The discipline of musicology is a rather specificially 20th century institution growing out of a disparate range of 19th century studies of music theory, history, composition, etc. The OED edition extant at the time of the writing of this article dates the term musicology itself to 1909 or later. Although there are indeed practitioners throughout the world, most theorists are Anglo-American, with echoes in the French tradition of musicologie and German Musikwissenschaft. This nonfiction narrative traces the fiddle from its European origins to its American incarnation as a folk instrument, blending history with the personal stories of fiddle makers and players. The centerpiece around which a varied cast of luthiers and musicians shifts, the instrument itself is the main character of the narrative.

As the work unfolds, various facets of the fiddle's identity are explored, revealing a riddle of instrument—a creation whose beauty confounds, and whose anatomy contradicts physics and geometry, science and sense.
