The thesis includes the score of the musical composition Intelligentsia Suite by Charles Haarhues and an analysis of the work by the composer.

The composition is in two movements and is scored for symphonic winds, percussion, and piano. The specific instrumentation is:

Woodwinds: piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, English Horn in F, 3 clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet, and 2 bassoons.

Brass: 4 French horns in F, 2 trumpets in B-flat, 2 trombones, bass trombone, and tuba.

Percussion: vibraphone, xylophone, suspended cymbal, snare drum, bass drum, whip, tambourine, castanets, triangle, tam-tam, and 3 timpani.

The Mass for Strings, Winds and Chorus was written with two primary purposes: (1) to produce a complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass utilizing an isorhythmic cantus firmus style, similar to the cantus firmus settings common in the Medieval and Renaissance periods; and (2) to compose this setting in such a manner that it is performable in the environment originally intended for the Ordinary.

The isorhythmic cantus firmus technique of composition was almost exclusively used during the Medieval and Renaissance periods. The technique consists of imposing a rhythmic structure upon a common melody (often from plainchant or …

This article outlines the lineage of text-sound compositions, and its relationship with and amongst other forms of communication. The term ‘text-sound composition’ was introduced by a collective of Swedish artists in the late 1960s. This chamber music society were known as, ‘The Language Group’ of Fylkingen. This article describes the birth of text-sound compositions as a result of this group of artists’ experimental literary works with a tape recorder, and delves into the development of the identity of these compositions within the art world. An analysis on how electronic sound technology has altered the roles of the composer and the vocalist. By foregrounding timbre and making permanent the sound of the vocal performance, recorded sound and electronic music have the potential to impact the balance of power between the traditionally male composer and the female vocalist. The article refers to various singers and composers such as La Barbara, Diamanda Galas, and Laurie Anderson to demonstrate the potential impact of sound recordings to alter these gender dynamics.
