This eleven-minute brass quintet for two trumpets, horn, trombone, and tuba, "Our World As It Is", refers to current and recent tragedies taking place around the world. The first moment, "Confrontation", captures the anxiety caused by Nature's wrath and men's wars. The second movement, "Reflections: Prelude and Fugato", evokes this precious time for recollection. This set of five pieces was composed by and large during the summer of 2003 in a historic village of Gascony in the Midi-Pyrénées region of France and is based on impressions gathered during walks and rides taken in the magnificent hilly countryside. Music

The point of departure of this piece was an improvisation recorded two years earlier with Justin Yang and Grace Leslie. Although the piece ended up developing its very own compositional processes, mainly in terms of algorithmic manipulation of rhythm, the model offered by the recorded improvisation was always present to suggest important musical solutions throughout the compositional process.

The focus of this honours dissertation is rhythm in jazz-bass improvisation. It is an exploration of the rhythmic devices employed by cutting-edge bassist, Dave Holland (b. 1946). Through transcription and analysis of Holland's improvisation over a selection of compositions recorded by the award-winning Dave Holland Quintet, this study isolates the key rhythmic tools he uses to create engaging solos. Furthermore this study examines rhythmic concepts from North Indian Classical music (a primary influence on Holland) through transcription and analysis of rhythm in certain tabla compositions. What A Beast Art Thou!, Eric Malmquist

Compositions

"What a Beast Art Thou! - Three Shakespeare Songs," for bass voice and piano, explores the depths of the darker side of human nature. Using texts from Titus Andronicus Act 5, Timon of Athens Act 4, and Titus Andronicus Act 5 respectively, the three songs intend to express emotions of hate and anger, while conveying the drama unfolding during each particular scene. "What a Beast Art Thou!" was commissioned by William Roberts III and premiered by him in December 2005. Duration: approximately 10 minutes.

Compositions

"Pacific" is built in three main sections. Each of the main sections has a signature theme....The themes are placed throughout to suggest a journey from the Midwest to the Pacific: the geographical changes as well as the personal reflections that accompany travel. The epigraph, from historian Frederick Jackson Turner, is a question regarding the fale of American democratic values after the closing of the frontier, a question that we have yet to answer.

Wabi Sabi is a fantasy for eight instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, violin, viola, cello and bass. The title, a Japanese phrase, refers to a love and nostalgia for ancient times, for old 
things - antiques - things which evoke feelings of purity, nobility, hard won wisdom, an essential spirituality, true worth. A tea ceremony in a Kyoto garden is “wabi sabi”. The piece was formed intuitively as a kind of drama, perhaps a Japanese folk tale. The expansion of “time perception”, the savoring of sound colors and the evocation of mood is central to the aesthetic of this music.

This text is a complement to the musical composition The Spell of Speech, a piece for actress, electro-acoustic sounds and live-electronics composed in 2004 as part of the requirements to conclude the Master’s degree in Electro-Acoustic Music at Dartmouth College. The core of this research is the relationship between speech and music composition. The first chapter presents a theoretical framework comprising evolutionary musicology and music cognition.
