Musicians are familiar with the traditional categorizations of key relationships: closely related, parallel, relative, and foreign. While some of these terms do describe well the relatedness of keys, they do not provide a clear means of comparing the relative remoteness of all keys from a particular reference key. For example, how much “more distant” is E-flat major from C major than is G major or D minor? The model presented in this lecture includes a number of important factors that may affect the perception of key relationships and assigns numerical measures to those factors. The piece contained in the following pages is a musical composition written for a standard concert band. The piece is divided into three movements, with a duration of approximately fifteen minutes. The title of the work is derived from the three different seasonal changes. The first movement depicts the summer season changing into autumn. In the second movement, one finds the music of autumn transforming into winter. Lastly, in the third movement one hears a musical depiction of winter finally giving away to spring.

This musical work makes use of modal harmonies, chromatic scale patterns and lyrical melodies. There are …

Martin Ellerby: A Biographical Sketch Of The Composer And Descriptive Analysis Of Paris Sketches And Symphony For Winds, Jeffrey Cliff Mathews

This study of the wind band music of Martin Ellerby was undertaken in order to obtain information about the important components of his musical style and to understand his compositional procedures. An interview with the composer combined with other background information related important influences and events in the development of his musical language. Martin Ellerby has published over seventy works that include compositions for wind band, brass band, orchestra, choir, and chamber ensembles. Paris Sketches and Symphony for Winds are representative of his wind band output; therefore, these are the focus of this project. Their proper performance requires significant study …

Days Of Inspiration: A Chamber Symphony In Three Movements, Tamzen Marie Baker

My thesis is a chamber symphony in three movements. The instrumentation is as follows: one flute, one oboe, one clarinet, one bassoon, one horn, one timpani (movements one and three), one bongos(movements two and three), one triangle (movement two), one marimba(movement one), one vibraphone(movement two), one piano, one violin I, one violin II, one viola, one cello, and one string bass. The first movement also contains a soprano solo that is cued by other instruments if a soloist is unavailable.

The first movement is in Dorian and Aeolian modes. The second movement features a whole tone scale and a middle …

Vilma von Webenau (1875-1953) is not only worthy of study because of her connection with teacher Arnold Schoenberg. Her music is unique in the era of fin-de-siecle Vienna, but it also holds interest today because of its atmoshpheric and durational complexity, self-composed texts, and harmonic ambiguities. This critical edition seeks not only to present two of WEbenau's seventy works, but also to place Webenau in her historical and musical context. Exploring the aspects of Viennese modernism and the world that created it, I wish to give background to Webenau's life, of which so little is known. In trying to understand …

Structural Analysis Or Cultural Analysis? Competing Perspectives On The "Standard Pattern" Of West African Rhythm, Kofi Agawu

Publications and Research

Polyrhythmic dance compositions from West Africa typically feature an ostinato bell pattern known as a time line. Timbrally distinct, asymmetrical in structure, and aurally prominent, time lines have drawn comment from scholars as keys to understanding African rhythm. This article focuses on the best known and most widely distributed of these, the so-called standard pattern, a seven-stroke figure spanning twelve eighth notes and disposed durationally as <2212221>. Observations about structure (including its internal dynamic, metrical potential, and rotational properties) are juxtaposed with a putative African-cultural understanding (inferred from the firm place of dance in the culture, patterns of verbal discourse, …
